Not saying the Wings should be wasting available cap space but I can't see the Yzerman and Wings owner not wanting to improve their team by spending some available cap.
Many teams are so close or over the cap, the Wings should be able to get some short term veteran players "given" to them by cap strapped teams. Those players might be able to help the young Wings transition to the NHL.

Dont disagree but the reason they dont spend towards the cap floor is the up coming salaries that are needed from younger players

Little things; first, Laf doesn’t play center and even if he did, wings prob would transition him from the wing. I have a feeling AA gets traded at deadline. And I think Bert gets a long term contract

Oh, I agree with you and the Wings might be in a real good talent/cap position in few years. But let's say the Wings don't go after UFAs next season and have let's say 11m in cap next year. Maybe they pick up a veteran like Perrault or Backes and might even get a pick in the deal. Then at TDL might be able to trade that player for pick. Just saying there might be some handy vets with expiring contracts that the Wings might want to use next use next year.

I dont love markstrom but if you could somehow get him for that contract id do it for sure. hes had such a good season he might get more interest than you think.
