I'm all for ****ting on the Leafs, but come on. Why on earth would they do that? Brent Burns is going to be 35 in March, nobody is touching that deal.

I don't get this logic. Not only are players staying in the league longer, but they don't age the same way. I could easily see Burns playing into his 40s. While he will decline, he's likely to be worth his contract the entire way.

A trade that makes sense for both teams would be something around Burns for Nylander. Toronto's window is open NOW and Burns would be a giant boost to their defense. Nylander is a great young player but is excessive given Marner, Tavares, and Matthews. The Sharks downgrade on talent, but get much younger. Nylander could do better given he'd be one of the top forwards on the Sharks. Sharks can then let the defense center around Vlasic and Karlsson.

Excuse me? The game is clearly skewing younger, not older. Obviously there are exceptions like Jumbo Joe and Chara, but by and large players are declining Much sooner than in years past. It used to be a player was in his prime from like 27-33 and then a few years of NHL level hockey left. Now that peak is at like 24-30, and once the end comes, it comes way quicker. Burns still being this good at almost 35 is pretty surprising, but it's ridiculous to expect him to be able to keep it up for more than a season or two, let alone another half decade.

And then you have players like Giordano, Williams, Carter. Burns will definitely decline a bit, but I think he can definitely keep it up for 2-3 seasons, and even past that he will still be worth his contract if the cap continues to rise. Defensemen tend to age more gracefully, as well.

Well it's three guys making 11m. But better value than paying those three aging Dmen 26.5,
As much as fans rag on the Leafs defence, the Sharks have the third worse GAA and the third worse goal differential in the league. No Sharks can keep their untradeable contracts.

If Burns agrees to a trade, San Jose is gonna get back max return, no question.
