Rebuild

Created by: DenisPotvin
Team: 2019-20 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 16, 2019
Published: Dec. 15, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
TML fans will hate this, but I think that Toronto's window is open right now, and if they get Brent Burns, they would be heavy favorite for the next 2-3 years (at the least). Sharks fans might not like trading the best player, but they get significantly younger and make space for players like Merkley in the future.

Vlasic and Couture are traded to get some decent pieces and take the team in a new direction. Not a judgement on performance. Vlasic's decline has been greatly exagerrated and Couture is too valuable a piece for a rebuilding team to keep.

The Ryan trade is the Sharks paying 14+ million for their first-round-pick back. I would bet that Ottawa's parsimonious owner leaps at this.

The other trades are just the Sharks getting some value for spare parts like Thornton, Karlsson, and Heed.

I don't follow the Sharks much but this is an actual rebuild, and not the typical retool or reload many here propose. You basically are getting 3 1st rounders because that Chicago pick just may be 32nd overall! Not to mention lots of cap space has been created. Nice job, bud.

Ottawa not gonna give you back that first even if you take bobby. They have loads of cap space his contract isn’t really a negative to them it actually helps them reach cap floor ?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but these contracts arent as movable as you're assuming. Burns I can see you still getting something good for. Vlasic though, I think SJ will find that contract hard to move unless they are paying another team to take it, as of right now I doubt MTL would even give you a 2nd rounder for him, let alone a rookie who is 5th in rookie scoring, another rookie who has played almost every game this season and looked good PLUS two picks, so you're really over valuing him here.

Take out Suzuki, Fleury, the 2nd and the Sharks retain a couple million and the Habs might consider it.

Vlasic's contract is basically unmovable for meaningful assets because of its ridiculous length. His decline might be overstated but he is declining all the same and moreover his contract will have him being paid for 7 more full seasons, handcuffing whatever team acquires him for multiple seasons.

Don't think they would consider it. That contract is not good.

Yup, maybe not even worth for even a 2023 7th.

Vlasic had a terrible first half to the 2019 season and a bad 10 games to start this season. He didn't look NHL-quality. But, the second half + playoffs of 2019 he was a #1 defenseman, just like he's been since the start of November this season.
