I like the Backstrom contract.

The rest is still a division leading team, but I'm starting to like the idea of bringing up some prospects.

There's some talk of trading Johansen for E. Svech, Vejdemo, or a similar forward prospect. If not, he could make the team out of camp and might just be a better puck mover than TVR or Beaulieu. If so, at 22, he'll have a lot of trade value, and a lot of potential to keep improving. Could even pair him with Kempny as training wheels, and try Siegenthaler covering back for Carlson.

I hope they can get him for less but look at his numbers, I think there will be a bit of a bidding war for his services so I leaned to the higher end. What do you think he will get?

All very good ideas in my opinion!

$0.00 from the Caps. Zero interest in Greiss.

Agree. Rather have Holtby at that price. Or a 50% retained Price. Greiss is off to a fantastic start, but he's never played this well before, and the odds he can keep it up into the postseason seem iffy, even with the great goalie coaching in Brooklyn now.

People saying that Holtby will get 10M because that's what Bob, Vas, Price, and Lundqvist got: only one of those teams is in playoff position each time I check. GMs can do the math, and see they're better off with an average goalie at an average salary, and a balanced roster out front. So if that drives the market on starting goalies down to 5-6M, the Caps already know how to play well with Holtby, and might as well keep him around.

If that is what Holtby is going to cost then absolutely but that is a steal. I highly doubt his salary comes in at 5-6 million. Around 9m/per is my guess.

So if you can't re-sign Holtby what do you do? I don't think you would want a Samsonov - Copley tandem. Samsonov is the goalie of the future but I think you need an experienced back up for at least a couple more years.

I would much rather go with a Samsonov - Copley tandem then pay Greiss $5Mx3. He will be 37 at the end of that contract. You give experienced backups $2M contracts, not $5M contracts.
Samsonov will be 23/24 next season. Time to put up or shut up.

Caps have essentially 2 viable backups in Hershey right now in Copley and Vanecek. Copley showed he can be a solid backup and I think Vanecek can be, and I reckon so does GMBM since he gave him a 3 year extension.

Definitely don't want to pay a mercenary goalie who is going to be old when that contract begins!
