Idea For A Fire Sale

Created by: TheWolfe
Team: 2019-20 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 11, 2019
Published: Dec. 16, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
My rationale:

Edmonton needs forward depth like Ken Hitchcock needs a gym membership. AA is having a bad year, but so is most the damn team. I think he could fill a 2nd line role there and would certainly be an upgrade over Ganger. The Oil also badly need bottom 6 help, which LGD would be perfect for (FFS, they have Shehan in the lineup right now). Wings can afford to could retain salary on both easily to help Edmonton's cap situation and take on a contract like Manning's. A first may sound like a lot, but if the Oilers manage to not collapse in the 2nd half it will be a very late first. A high level prospect, preferably one who's currently playing on the continent, would also be a fair return.

Toronto needs a backup. Plain and simple. I know Jimmy hasn't looked great this year, but Hasek circa 1998 would struggle to look good backstopping this team. Leafs fans also want Ceci run out of town and I'd bet my lunch money Dubas would LOVE to have $2.5 mil worth of cap space free'd up for another deadline move or two. Hell, send them Bernier instead if they really want and party like it's 2014. Throw the wings one of Toronto's 4th round picks for their trouble.

*Edit: I initially had a trade between Nashville centering around Green and Watson, but Nashville was further down the standings than I thought and I forgot that not only did Watson just sign a new deal, he also has domestic violence issues in his past. So I switched this trade to...

Winnipeg has been impressive with a depleted D core this year, but they could use more help. Green would be great on a third pairing/2nd PP quarterback role and they can afford to take his contract on especially if Detroit retains. Wings swap SJ's 3rd for Jet's 2nd so basically Winnipeg gets a Green for the rest of the year in exchange for moving down 15-20 spots in the draft.

with the preds currently out of the playoffs, they aren't making that trade - and they just resigned Watson to a 3 year extension. Not a great look for Poile and the preds if they trade him only a months later.

That was my gut feeling, especially at the amount he signed for. Preds are further down the standings that I thought but the west is so top heavy I could still see them getting one of the wild card spots. Chi, LA, and ANA are trash. Sharks recent streak seems like a mirage, and Minnesota will **** the bed like they always do. If Rinne gets his **** back together, I think they'd be fine.

Edit: With the Jets so depleted on D, I wonder if they'd be interested in Green's services for like a 3rd with a pick going back
villenash liked this.

The AA trade is garbage, Manning is a bottom pairing Dman we don't need. And FYI you can only retain on 3 players not 4.

Good catch on the retain limit. Manning was necessary to make the cap work for Edmonton and he's on an expiring deal. And I'm guessing the market isn't too hot for a guy with the worst +/- in the league and a defensive liability.

Yzerman wont sell low on AA right now, AA to Edmonton for Edmontons 2020 1st round pick currently #20 overall+Ethan Jones with a reasonable extension in place. Though i doubt AA signs long term with Holland being Edmonton's GM now.
