NJD would want Wahlstrom or Dobson

Created by: Hawkisles
Team: 2019-20 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 16, 2019
Published: Dec. 16, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So let’s give them Wahlstrom

The Isles get two wingers that will collectively make their offense go from awful to great, and unload one of their bad contracts. By the end of the season, the Isles end up with more cap space, and can decide to keep either Simmonds or Hall from there. I also get the feeling that, while Simmonds has struggled on the Devils, he’d do extremely well in a Barry Trotz system.

The Devils get a future star winger, a future power play quarterback, yet another 1st round pick and a veteran defenseman who, while on a bad contract, is playing well right now.
Trades
NJD
  1. Boychuk, Johnny
  2. Wahlstrom, Oliver
  3. Wilde, Bode
  4. 2020 1st round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
1st rounder is lottery protected (likely unnecessary)

If NJD wanted Ladd’s contract instead of Boychuk, I’d also accept that.

If I'm the Islanders, I have no interest in giving up Wahlstrom and Wilde. Plus, Boychuk's M-NTC will make sure he doesn't go there.

This is a pretty realistic case scenario. NJ gets a bad contract when we will have major cap space after this season, get a solid top 4 defensemen, and get a solid top 6 player potentially top line gunner with a first. If the islanders WANT Hall and think they can re-sign they will have to overpay. This is a solid deal imo.

I wouldn’t blame anyone for wanting to keep Wahl and Dobson, even if it meant losing out on Hall. But let’s be honest with ourselves, the Isles will get outbid by every suitor if we insist on keeping them off the table. Besides, their insistence that Wahl or Dobson go on the table could allow us to insist that either Boychuk or Ladd go on the table.

Personally, I’d think the Devils defense has more to be afraid of from Hall-Barzal than the Isles defense has to be afraid of from Wahlstrom-Hughes.

Hall is going to want panarin money, we can’t afford that.

With Boychuk gone and perhaps another contract moved, we could. We could find a way to trade away Komarov or Clutterbuck. I also think Ladd will retire either at the end of this year or by the end of this coming offseason. Though I’m not going to act like I don’t see your point, I do. I just think that, if the Isles land Hall (they won’t, I think it’ll either be Arizona or Colorado), they’re going to have to give up a big piece to do so.

Yeah I’m just worried hall is going to decline heavy in a few years. With his style of play + injuries, his contract could turn out to be disastrous. I think he’ll get 11.5 x 7, and it starts at his age 29 season. I think he’ll give you 3 solid seasons, but that 11.5 for his age 32-35 seasons are going to be brutal. Panarin on the other hand doesn’t have a lot of mileage and his game will age well IMO, similar to Patrick Kane. He would’ve been perfect

I mean, the trades I’d want to get done are for Toffoli and either Pageau or Athanasiou, but it sounds like ever since Vegas got Mark Stone from under Lou’s nose, Lou’s been bug game hunting. He lost out on Stone, barely lost out on Panarin and now he wants to try again for Hall. I want depth moves, but I guess I can’t blame Lou for seeking a top of the line winger. Everyone in the league knows Barzal could be a 100 point player with a good enough sniper next to him.
