Why did the Devils trade for Gusev?

Pretty easy decline still in my eyes. Vatanen isn't the guy the leafs need for Rielly, and there are serious doubts on if Wood will ever be able to even get near that 19 goal mark again. Its not a gamble I take.

There are few guys on the Devils whom I'd be interested in aquiring that would require Kapanen in return, and those guys would require much more than him alone.

Because they were under the illusion that Hall was an MVP candidate, Schneider was a true #1, Subban was a 60+ point D, and Hughes was a Calder fav. Obviously, none of these ludicrous presumptions came to fruition.

Hall has been decent, but he was clearly not very motivated. Subban has been a disaster, Hughes has looked good at times, but needs structure and better coaching, and Cory...I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Look at his AHL numbers! I'm 100% sure he'll never suit up as a Devil again in his career. His AHL save % is hovering around .800 (not a typo).

I'm convinced that Palmieri will NOT be traded. He's a NJ native and a core part of the Devils leadership. That could change next season when he'll be a pending UFA. Vatanen and Simmonds will def. be dealt though.
