Kovalchuk is Gone But Not Forgotten

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2020-21 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 16, 2019
Published: Dec. 17, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Amazing how much the cap hits of Kovalchuk and Phaneuf limit the flexibility of a team that's at the bottom of the table. These are all nice young prospects learning how to play, but this looks like another bottom-5 team next season.

Don’t be too down. Kings are among the top of the league in possession and corsi. Although 1st in shots against. The issue comes down to the roster itself. Hopefully Turcotte, Vilardi, JAD, Bjornfot and maybe Clague can make a good impact next season. Blake needs to be a player in free agency this is the year to do it. If not then he should be fired. He says the plan is “The Plan” and nobody even knows what it is and I’m convinced he doesn’t either. I’ve been saying for awhile now this off-season coming up will be a defining time for Rob Blake as GM if he doesn’t show his offers to players via FA to the owners within 1 week he should be fired.

It could be a blessing in disguise. They won't be able to rush out and try to fix their roster via free agency, so they'll be bad for another year or 2 while picking up some solid prospects.

Agreed, but as my construction shows, unless I am way off on how much the internal re-signings are going to cost, there isn't much room for a free agent unless Blake can move either Jeff Carter or Jonathan Quick off the books.

I hope that "The Plan" includes not getting shoved down to fifth place in the draft. Kirby Dach or Kaapo Kakko sure would make a difference. Maybe Turcotte will eventually have a similar impact.

Kings will have a lot of cap space. The only one that will get over 2m is Walker and I project it being a 2M for 3 years type of deal. Possibly less not more. Cliffy will be less than 1.5m long term. 4 years or so.

Kings can look like this if they wanted:
Hall Kopitar Brown
Carter Turcotte Vilardi
Kempe Anderson-Dolan Simmonds/Grundström
Clifford Lizotte Wagner
Amadio

Bjornfot Doughty
Muzzin Barrie
Martinez Walker
MacDermid

Petersen
Quick
Campbell

Thats without trading Carter and Quick. If they traded Carter that’s almost another 6M in cap space.

There’s no blessing in that when Kopitar and Doughty are tired and washed up from carrying this team by then. Kings need to get better not worse. They aren’t as bad as everyone thinks even right now if you really look into. Give that roster a makeover and see the different look better and better. Kings need to be BIG free agency players this offseason.

I know you want Turcotte to play more years in the NCAA, but it's very unlikely that he won't be on this team next season. Vilardi too.

Additionally, you have Kovalchuk's cap hit on your ACGM twice. His salary is already included in the "terminated" section with Mike Richards, and you also have him on the roster on IR, so your cap hit is $6.25M too high.
