Vatanen

Created by: Leaf_Fan_93
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 17, 2019
Published: Dec. 17, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What do the Leafs need to add to make a Vatanen trade happen? Leafs need to find a way to do it without trading a current roster player (and unload Ceci). Or somehow unload him somewhere else. I know it's asking a lot.
Since Keefe took over Ceci has seen his ice time decline rapidly, his decision making is not good enough to play in this system. This solves a lot of problems:

Gives Reilly a right shot, stay at home D partner.
Will help the PK.
Allows Barrie to play easier 3rd pair minutes.
Creates cap space to keep Engvall in the lineup and carry a full 23 man roster.
Creates cap space to address the backup goalie position.

Ryan Miller is settled in SoCal. His wife is an actress and has no plans of signing anywhere else, may even retire after this year. He's 39 years old and I bet he'd like one more shot a cup. The Leafs have 2 back to backs in December and none in January (plus a 10 day break). Make the Miller deal in February, Freddie can carry the load until then with Hutch having 2-4 starts.

From everything I read, it seems like the Leafs need to send Ceci, Bracco, and their 2020 2nd or 3rd for it to get done.

EDIT: This is with the Devils retaining half of Vatanen's salary.

Is Vatanen really an upgrade over Ceci (and at what cost). Seem like at three Jersey Dmen have been constantly traded to the Leafs...Vatanen, Subban, and Severson and folks think those guys are difference makers?

That seems very reasonable, maybe not enough. If that's the price I would pull the trigger. I not sure I want to see Simmonds included in the deal which has been rumored. Sure he adds some grit/toughness, but even with salary retention it's a tough hit for a cap strapped team.

Yes, Vatanen would be an upgrade over Ceci (Subban too expensive and Severson not defensively minded enough). Ceci's physical abilities are fine, but his decision making with the puck, especially under pressure, couldn't be worse. And even if it's not an upgrade, the salary retention alone makes it worth it for the Leafs and allows them to do something else down the road or just to be able to carry a full roster.

But isn't that rub. If Vatanen is THAT good, the Devils get a good return in trade from another rfor him and his expiring contract The Leafs would have match that and then add even more for the difference Ceci' contract. So now the Leafs are really overpaying for an expiring contract, and questionable how much better than are with Vatanan...who now how to learn the Leafs than Ceci.
Why pick on Ceci? He hasn't been the Leafs worse Dman this season.

Ceci is garbage. However, the Leafs have the resources within to solve this. The problem is getting someone to take Ceci and his 4.5 million dollars. That is what needs to happen. Ceci needs to be removed. That is a tall order at this point.

Definitely much better than Ceci. Ceci really isn't good.

Not sure Vatanen is a stay at home dman (as mentioned in the posts description) but I think he could work well in this new leafs system. I'd even be interested in resigning him if it were around 4 mil.

Ceci has without a doubt been the leafs worst Dman of the 6 regulars. I think your explanation makes it seem as if every team is trying to get Vatanen. how many teams are interested in a rental RHD and have cap space? out of those, how many think Vatanen is their guy? so yeah maybe the leafs have to out-bit a team or 2 for NJ to take Ceci.
