Take On Money For STL For Picks

Created by: ClockReads2113

Initial Creation Date: Nov. 4, 2019

Description
Caps are set to have around $7M in cap space this summer once Holtby walks. They should use that money to take on a bad contract/s for some good picks. This way Caps can still kill it while building for the future.

STL frees up over $7M in space this summer to make room for Peity and fill in some other holes, though it will cost them. They also get a 3rd and a very underrated bottom 6 offensive forward in Boyd who deserves to be playing somewhere. Boyd at 5v5 per 60 over the last 2 seasons is 35th in points and 11th in primary assists (among players 500 minutes). He's very underrated.

Steen cost way too much but he's still an elite defensive forward, so he isn't useless. Allen is in the same boat, he's not worth $4.35M but he's still a reliable backup, which will be good for Samsonov. Though I'd rather see Vanecek behind Samsonov and send Allen down as a great #3.

Value could also be made up in form of a top prospect. It also doesn't have to be with STL, can be any team that needs to shed a contract.

I think Samsonov will need time as a backup, and Allen can be a starter. Also you have the space to make the Blues retain a little less on Steen so you should really do that if you have no plans on making more scratched players

Yeah I guess we'll see how Samsonov does by the end of this season. I think right now he's leading all rookie goalies in all stats. And I'd love to take less on Steen, but just doing the most to get the trade done.

I’d rather just trade Bozak, buyout/trade Allen, and keep the first round pick.

Allen can't be a full time starter. At least he's never been a consistent one without a major change. He's much better in a 1a/1b situation. That being said, Washington is good enough defensively to help him out. But Blues wont give up a first to rid of Steen's contract.

You expect waaay too much for eating about $7M in cap (I say 7 because we have zero use for Boyd). Both players coming your way are quite useful, these are not straight cap dumps. Allen in particular is gaining actual trade value with every start.

You could do that but that would ruin my plans for world domination, so please don't.

Then Samsonov and Allen can play 40/40 and then someone plays another two games

Like I said, they ARE useful, but do you want to be paying them that much? Doubtful, especially if it means keeping Piety. Steen is probably actually worth $1.5M-$2M and Allen $2M-$2.5M in value.

Allen with a .923 I don’t think so he isn’t a cap dump nor is Steen. They are both impacts right now. Bozak is probably the one to go

Okay, for the sake of argument, let's take your valuations right down the middle and say those two would be worth $4M on the ice next season, and then add about $0.75M for the retention on Steen. That basically means you want a 2020 1st AND 2nd to eat $2.25M in cap and throw us a 3rd. Doesn't that seem a bit excessive (especially when, at this rate, Allen is bound to have other suitors)?

Even Bozak isn't a straight cap dump. He's overpaid, but still has decent on-ice value as a 30-40 pt man who forechecks, wins faceoffs and kills penalties. Unlike a lot of teams, we don't have any straight cap dumps.

jake allen would have value for a goalie needy team with the way hes been playing this year. He also has shown he could be the true starter in previous years
