14. A couple of my Russian contacts reached out after last week’s note about Islanders goaltending prospect Ilya Sorokin — who is considering an extension in the KHL. They think he’s trying to force a trade from New York to someplace with a clearer path to start. There would be interest — he’s very talented. We’ll see where this goes.

Montreal isn't going to trade 2 seconds for Leddy. You will get more value from other teams.

Use it as a placeholder then. Seems like decent value for Leddy regardless of who is acquiring him

Not worth it for a team not going for the cup. Those 2nds would be much more useful for us than Leddy would.

The signed Varlamov long term. Im sure he was thinking last year once Lehner and Greiss contracts were up, he and Soderstrom would be the next in line. Varly's contract basically means he has accept backup duty.

I don't actually blame Sorokin. He's already 24, can't afford to be a starter at 27...

This trade makes sense if DET wins lottery and gets Laff, makes Mantha expendable.

Realistically he's a "1B" guy for his first season just to get acclimated. Then, becomes the go-to guy moving forward. I think Varly should be a positive thing since they're close friends. I don't know, guess we'll see. But I find it hard to believe Lamoriello would have let Lehner walk and sign Varly to the contract he did if he didn't already think (know?) Sorokin was in the plans

I think DET could be a destination, but Mantha wouldn't be the piece DET would trade. If you could guarantee Sorokin would sign (if the Freidman rumor is true), you are probably looking at AA for DET as the piece that moves, with a piece coming back to DET with Sorokin (maybe a mid-round pick or B prospect.

If DET has the 1OA in 2020, and Lafreniere is the pick, then they'd want to potentially partner Mantha with him, or move Mantha with Zadina.

If that was the case why would Sorokin threaten signing in the KHL to get traded elsewhere?

Watch him sign a short term deal (wherever he goes), then sign with a Original 6 team. Don't know what it is with Russians, but it's like they can't imagine an NHL career without playing for either the Rangers, Hawks or Red Wings.

Supposedly he wants to go where he can start? But as of now it's total speculation.

Agreed. Detroit is an ideal spot, especially losing Comrie on waivers. But if you think Mantha is available in that trade you’re huffing good stuff.

Yzerman would never deal Mantha for a guy that has 0 NHL experience, Even if he could be an elite goaltender. I might be willing to move AA for Sorokin but not Mantha.
