Description
This season is not over. Make some trades today that could turn it around. Jones has been a top ten goalie, but the Sharks have imploded. Is the the problem, or can he still shine behind a different defense? Panik got 44 points in his last year in Chicago, but he and Eller aren't clicking on a checking line. Maybe Toews gets him going.

Plan on re-signing Lehner, long term, but only if he can show he's better than Jones, down the stretch. Make this trade early, so if Jones earns the job, the Hawks can still trade Lehner at the deadline.

I tried to build four even lines and three decent pairs on defense. If you'd make different lines, post your lines? If nothing else, I got some draft picks for guys likely to be traded, and I made trades the other teams should accept.

Agreed. There's zero chance the Hawks take on Jones's contract unless insane prospects are coming with. Merkely alone wouldn't be enough. 5 year's $5.75M for a backup is ridiculous.

Yep. Sharks might even add a bit, because Crow is having a better year than Jones.

Merkley is not being traded for an aging, oft injured goalie on the back 9 of his career...not even remotely considerable.

Idk why his idiot is trading Jones, Jones is untradeable with his contract. I’d much rather keep Jones and Merkley then take Crawford. I don’t mean this offensively, this trade shouldn’t exist at all.

Yeah, Merkley seems high, given that Jones might bounce back, but adding something to move Jones' contract seems reasonable, and renting a future Hall of Fame goalie to climb four spots in the wild card race seems reasonable. Would you add Merkley for Lehner?

It's not for an aging goalie. It's shedding a $5.75M Jones. That's what his value is now. I 100% agree with you that this trade should NOT exist and 100% agree with you that SJ should keep Jones. He has negative value right now, but since it's THAT bad...and it is that bad...if you want to dump him then it would be an insane cost today.

GSAA of -22.87 and -16.21 for the past 2 years. He's terrible.

You misread my point, obviously. I said I wouldn’t trade Merkley for Crawford. I don’t care about Jones because he is not moveable. Merkley is a top offensive defenseman prospect and he is worth wayyyy more than Crow coming off major concussions and 34 years old. Not. Even. Close.

No, I heard you. You think the biggest piece of this trade is Merkley and wouldn't trade him for Crow. The reality is...those 2 guys are the smaller pieces in this trade. This biggest piece in this hypothetical trade has negative value...it's Martin Jones' contract. You're not even mentioning his value. The real question is...what else does SJ need to send in order to dump Martin Jones 5 more years at $5.75M of being literally the worst goalie in the NHL. Hawks don't have the space and wouldn't even do it for Merkley.

^correct. And it isn't close, the way Jones is playing this year and last year, ever since the Sharks picked up Karlsson. But on a team without Karlsson, taking on Jones for Merkley might present an interesting gamble. Because Jones used to be good, and might get good again, at what would then turn into a fair price, and the Hawks have nothing more to play for this year.

This is interesting. Sending BOTH Jones and Merkley to a team with plenty of cap. Stevie Y might do it. He's on a pure tank mission anyway.

Yeah, and the Sharks could throw in a 3rd for Bernier. But I think they'd be better off throwing in a 2nd for Crow, if he's up for helping Thornton, Marleau, and Burns push for the playoffs.
