tweaks at RD with SJ and WSH

Created by: Eli
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 19, 2019
Published: Dec. 19, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ceci gets Karlsson going, and the Sharks get to reunite Vlasic and Burns to get them playing better, too.

The Caps shouldn't trade Gudas. They should re-sign him. Unless they can't. Then a couple decent prospects might make sense, long term.

So SJ get a top four of Karlsson, Ceci, Vlasic and Burns. Their three expensive guys start producing and they make the playoffs. Tor and WSH get a little bit of cap space. Tor upgrades its defense. Wsh moves Jensen up to 2nd pair, and reuintes Djoos and Siegenthaler on third pair. Washington's defense gets a bunch worse, without Gudas, but their forward prospect depth is suddenly average.

SJ is very uninterested. Our top AHL scorer, our top forward prospect for Ceci...no sir, that would not work for us.

Every trade you make for the sharks makes them infinitely worse. Your a caps fan why do you even do it?

Karlsson has been our best player since November. He doesn’t need Ceci to get going...grade A troll post folks, move along.

I can't understand why the Sharks are so excited to miss the playoffs when Ottawa gets their pick. Chmelevski is their best forward prospect who isn't Bregmann or Gregor, or Gambrell? Come off it.

If it's AHL scoring you want, Toronto should be happy to throw in Pontus Aberg. Yes, adding an NHL player who works well with your highest-paid NHL player will cost something. If not a decent forward prospect and a good AHLer, what did you have in mind?

I'd definitely trade Ceci for Gudas, but there is no way he's on the top pair. Gudas is a bottom 4 defender.

He's played top four minutes for three years now, but who's counting? He's covered back for Provorov and Orlov, but can't cover back for Reilly? Whatever. You're just wrong.

WSH doesn't have any need for Ceci, unless Gudas walks as a UFA, in which case maye they offer Ceci 1Mx1yr to try to prove himself on a good team.

What I'm trying to say is you misspelled "Mikheyev."

Wtf...SJ playoffs or not would have to be mentally unstable to trade their best forward prospect and their top scorer with the Barracuda for freaking Ceci.. and your thought was Ceci would “get Karlsson going”. Ceci is an RHD, Karlsson is an RHD. Did you consider that? I’ve seen you make trades for the Sharks many times and as Bill said, they always make the Sharks much worse...do you have something against Sharks fans? Some weird vendetta? Or just really clueless and bored.

Gudas is a 2nd pair defender at best. He isn't a top pair guy, never will be. He's about the same as Adam Larsson. Just a stay at home guy who hits a lot but can't handle the puck all that well, isn't the greatest skater and can get exposed badly by top talent. In a perfect world you have those guys on the 3rd pair playing sheltered 5v5 mintues and killing penalties. In a pinch they don't hurt you on the 2nd pair but top pair is a different story. To suggest that Gudas can handle top pair minutes just isn't a reality.

Just clueless and bored, but not as clueless as this guy who says Karlsson wouldn't score more points with the guy he played with when he got 82 points. He's playing with a 7M Vlasic now and only on pace for 61 points. His plus minus is better, but that's not getting the Sharks a wild card.

If your attack on Gudas is that he's just like Adam Larsson, I completely agree. Well said. That's generous, even. Carry on.

As a comeback, I humbly submit that your mother is so unattractive, she isn't always mistaken for Gwyneth Paltrow, sometimes just for Jennifer Anniston.

Larsson isn't good. He never has been and never will be. He's a #4 defenceman on some teams and in a perfect world should be bottom pair. So many people on here see him as this terrific shutdown defenceman but he isn't that. Last year when he had too after Klefbom got hurt, he was completely outclassed. He missed time this year and the Oilers were better. He's nothing special. Just like Gudas. They just adhere to fans because they are tough but they aren't difference makers. They are better Roman Polak's or Nakita Zaitsevs. If they are on your bottom pair, they can be a good addition but thats about it.

Karlsson played less than 65 minutes with Ceci in 15/16 (the season he scored 82). His main partner was Methot who he logged over 1000 minutes with, followed by Claesson who he was paired with for 280 minutes.

Karlsson has made a fine pair with Vlasic as well. Once they paired together both their +/- sky rocketed. There’s nothing intelligent about this guys trade.

A tough blueliner isn't going to be the difference between winning or losing against the Bruins. TO was the better team at 5v5 last playoffs but Babs refusal to make any adjustments on the PK and his desire to play Marleau instead of Matthews when they were down a goal in game 6 are why TO lost. Keefe won't be outcoached like Babs was by Cassidy.

That being said, Ceci needs to be upgraded for TO. He's the only weak link on the team other than the backup.

Okay, so is Gudas a slight upgrade over Ceci? And does adding 1M of cap space make it easy to find a backup? Or does Tor add a 3rd for Copley?

That's amazing. Math is so fun. Ceci and Karlsson's XGF% was 15% better than Methot and Karlsson's that year, and their actual goals for percent was 71.43%, but their zone starts were two thirds offensive, and it's a small sample size, so it probably doesn't mean much.

Yeah the stats are interesting, but the main thing in this case is that Ceci wasn't the guy playing beside Karlsson when he had his 82 point season.

Right. Okay. And Karlsson with Vlasic this year is on pace for 61 points. Burns without Vlasic is on pace for 52.

Burns with Vlasic last year got 83 points, and Karlsson last time he played with Ceci got 62. So Ceci to SJ gives Karlsson one more point and Burns 31 more points. Ceci and Karlsson together on first pair in Ottawa were minus a billion, but put them on second pair, and they should be even because the competition is easier. The seasons over a third finished, but SJ can get 20 more points from its blue line in exchange for an overperforming 6th round pick and a minor league UFA.

Considering Karlsson never had a season playing 80 minutes total with Ceci, I don't see how Karlsson's totals can be attributed to Ceci in any meaningful way. Your argument here seems to be, Karlsson will play better if SJ acquires a guy he averaged less than a minute per game on the ice with when he was in Ottawa.

Fair enough. Didn't realize. It looks like the main guys Karlsson had success with are Methot, Phaneuf, and Chabot. Karlsson and Boro were terrible. Karlsson and Ceci were pretty solid, but in limited minutes.

Ceci is a #4 defenseman who can play well at either end of the ice, but not both in the same year. I think if Tor throws in Aberg (their top AHL scorer, last time I checked), and retains the above 1.5M, it comes out fair and helps San Jose start climbing into playoff position.

Lol. The Caps have even less cap space than Toronto, and Ceci is just Gudas without the checking or fighting, at a higher cap hit. I am not suggesting that. smile

Then there is nothing further to discuss. Gudas is only an upgrade over Ceci, and that is the only player on TO's roster than should be upgraded. To be honest, I'd love to see Liljegren get a chance to play a few games at some point. If he's better than Ceci, then we can just sit Ceci or send him down to the Marlies or something.
