This is some bad contracts. The only one that is good is the Barzel contract for 8.250 for 6 years. That is way too much for Devon Toews, Pulock should get 5m for 3 years. But the worst one of all is the Josh ho-sang contract. You think that Boston will accept that deal. It is Dal cole for 2 and a 3. Why would you trade away Leddy ever?
I disagree with what you said about Devon Toews. He's already our best left handed defenseman, puts up way more points than he needs to and he's still sound defensively. If we sign him to 4m aav for 5 years, that contract will look like a steal in 3-4 years.
And here's why everyone wants to trade away Leddy:
- He's not super old yet, but his game relies on speed, and once his speed declines, he'll be pretty useless. I'm happy to have him now while he can still skate hard, drive play and adhere to the Trotz system, but he could slow down at any point in the next 2-3 years.
- Toews is a younger, faster, better version of Leddy. We probably need a stay-at-home defenseman to replace Leddy. Bolduc is a years away from being NHL ready, but that's the kind of defenseman I'd want to fill his void.
- While I'm not wild about Pelech personally, there's no denying he's a Top 4 type of defenseman, especially next to Pulock. So with Toews and Pelech filling out the top two LHD slots, why hang on to Leddy? Why let him occupy 5.5 of our salary cap if we have better, younger options in house already?
- The Isles offense is bad. Giving up extraneous defensemen for a scoring winger on Barzal's wing just makes inherent sense. Which is why I think he should be packaged with picks/prospects to acquire a winger as opposed to trading him for picks, but that's neither here nor there.
