Marleau was 35+ and said he wouldn't play anywhere but Toronto or Sj, so it was a purely cash transaction. Buying out Marleau cost Carolna 6.25m against the Cap Backes would cost 4m next year and 2m the following year.

The Leafs were heavily backed into a corner because they needed to have money readily available in case of an RFA offer sheet to Marner. Otherwise, they would have 7 days to make a deal and move salary so they could match which would have put them in a lot worse positions when trading with other teams.

The first issue is the Debrusk contract. Takes him right to UFA without buying out any UFA years, so the Bruins certainly won’t do that. Just bump it down to three years and I think it’s fine. I think Grzelcyk will cost more, but no too much more for that term. 4 million would be fine. I think Chara comes back. He’s pretty close to the d man to play the most games in NHL history. I think he wants that. Absolutely zero need for Merrill. No way they give him a deal with an NHL cap hit.

There will inevitably be a team that needs to get to the floor, who would be interested in him. A well respected vet. who isn't completely useless. He's a 4th liner on half the teams in the league... He's just vastly overpaid and one year of Backes' leadership could do really well for someone like Tkachuk.

Yes, it will help the B's, but it can also help another team. If the cost to get rid of him is too high, the Bruins would be better off just buying him out. They would get 2m Cap relief in year one and could deal moore without hurting the team and clear up 2.75m more.

that would leave them with about 22m for (Debrusk 5.5m , Krug 6.5 , Bjork, 2.8m Grz 4.5m, Chara 2m and Backup goalie.) That is if the Cap stays the same too.
