Burying his cap hit before the deadline eliminates any chance of trading him for value. With an NTC, you basically have to find a better team that needs a backup goalie at his level. So you're probably stuck retaining in a trade with the Leafs.

I tried posting Smith and ALL of the picks/prospects for Holtby, but nobody on either side liked that.
