I'd say yes, but at least he's an NHLer. There are definitely worst busts out there.

No. It was a mistake to take him in the 1st round. Nothing about his play in Junior play suggested he had 1st round upside.

He was a below PPG junior player who was drafted because he was 6'5 and was a gritty character guy. He's become roughly what he was supposed to.

Minus the Gritty part. For someone his size, and knowing he's 4th line for life, you would think he would make sure he is useful by using his size more physically.

Aside from this slight irritant trait, I find he has grown into a solid (never going to stand out for good or bad things, just a consistent player) depth player who has gotten very good at winning draws. 1st round worthy? No. Maybe a late 2nd to 3rd of that's what you are missing on your team. 4th to 5th if not.

Yes. You don't draft 4th line centres in the first round

not everyone drafted in the 1st round is going to be a 1C.
The percentage of 1st round picks who actually play a career 500 games in the NHL is roughly 55%.
If you take out the top few picks, say 5, that number drops to under 50%.
So I'm not sure how you get busts out of late round 1sts. They already have an uphill climb into the NHL since the day they are drafted.

IIRC he had a fantastic world Juniors. That is pretty much it. Combine that with his size and Burks pursuit of truckulence they decided he'd be a good pick.
Even in draft Day it was a head scratcher though as his upside was always a gritty 3c at best. Size and grit are great, but draft for skill and upside first and you'll generally do fine

For a Brian Burke draft,,,, Gauthier is one of the few draft picks that even made the NHL. It was difficult for the Leaf executives to make good personnel decisions when the 20 Vice Presidents in the Burke era sole job was to dine and wine with the club president and telling him how smart he was.

Was never gonna be a top C, bad decision taking him round one. Upside was 3-4 C that could kill penalties

No he wasnt. No one in their right mind should have picked him in the first round, his highest potentials was an ok 3c at the time of his draft an to think he would be anything better was a stupid decision. Honestly for me hes exceeded my expectations but there was no way he could even shown that he should have been drafted in the 3rd or 4th round much less the 1st

I would not call him a bust. Agree with the above^. He should have been a 2nd rounder.
