Beginning of the Yzerman Era

Created by: redw1n9s
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 27, 2019
Published: Dec. 27, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
That top 9 is ready to rumble. Still need Holland's garbage to expire in a couple of years (Nielsen/Deke/Abby) until we can go for any big UFA. Daley and Green traded or just left to expire by the end of the year.

Still a borderline playoff team, as there will be growing pains and the D is young, but let this team grow together.

McIsaac and Lindstrom hopefully ready to make the jump next year.

DK isn’t garbage. Overpaid; yes, but he is a solid d first defenseman that would fit well into a second pairing on most teams. On the open market he’d prob still get over $4 mil aav. Also, you have $22 mil in cap space, ya don’t need to wait for any contracts to expire before making a UFA deal. And 925000 is the entry level number.

The Jets have some RFA'S to sign in the summer that will eat up what little cap space they have so I can't see them taking on Helm with his additional season of term even if the Wings retained salary.
I also think even with the retention a 2nd is a bit of a reach, a 3rd is the most any team would likely give for him.

Winnipeg isn’t making any moves especially at forward when our defence is as decimated as it is. Right now we are a bubble team and it isn’t worth giving up assets this year.

You're exactly right. Forgot that Helm expires next year and not this coming year. That trades makes no sense for them with another year...oops.

One right handed forward on your team... might want to address that.

Ya well you can add that to the list of many Holland failures over the last decade or so....

The Wings aren't going into next year with all that cap space, even if means short term UFA signings or getting some cap dumps (moderately good players) from cap strapped teams.
But the Wings have hope, though still won't see the playoffs till 2023...maybe.

I would love to see Yzerman sign Barrie or Hamonic, even Vatanen, but I doubt it. Cap dumps are possible but trying to guess those is foolish.

Agreed. 2023 at the earliest.
