Toews has a way better chance of producing positive valueon his contract than Panarin.

I think its a matter of the individual player's ages and positions. Toews will end in for years at the age of 35. I think it's reasonable to predict that Toews will likely be a top-six forward for the majority of that, and even if he declines he should still be a serviceable 3rd line center at the end. Panarins contract also ends at 35, and while we can't be sure of when his decline will start, wingers obsolescence often starts earlier than Centers. When Panarins production dries up, he is not going to become a good role player in the league with his style of play, and that's not to mention that Panarins contract does not line up with our window to compete. I think that we have a better chance of getting fair value out of Toews in the short and long term.

Ahhh, now ya see, you adding the line “window to compete” completely solidified your argument for me. I completely agree. However, I do believe that panarin could (and hopefully will) continue to produce till he’s 35. He is very much a Patrick Kane mold. So even if he does fall off slightly, remember that the rangers are a team on the rise and the hawks are either stagnate or in decline still. So, realistically, this is a very bad trade for both teams.

Now, the one other thing I will say, I’m not so sure the hawks have a window to compete anymore. I just think there’s too many things needing change, from coaching and management to both defense and depth forwards.
