Max Domi

Created by: SankFeravalli
Team: 2019-20 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 29, 2019
Published: Dec. 29, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Preface - I expect to get lit up in the comments by Habs fans

I think Colorado needs another top six forward. I think they need someone who can be more of a play maker for the second line, with shoot-first line mates in Kadri and Burakovsky. I also think they could use more sandpaper and physicality out of that player, and I think it would be helpful if that player could also play center in case of an injury to MacKinnon or Kadri. Finally, this player should be able to run the half wall on PP2, which has really struggled without a quarterback.

Max Domi fits this description as a player making wing with toughness, especially for his size, and a guy who can play center if necessary. He also doesn’t take away from Colorado’s team speed, and I think his personality and leadership would fit well in a tight-knit Avalanche locker room.

In return, Montreal gets a hulking shut-down left-defenseman in Zadorov, and a 21 year old former top-10 pick in Jost who could benefit from a change of scenery.

For Colorado, Domi replaces Jost among the 12 regular forwards, and Zadorov is replaced by Conor Timmins

Would this be enough to get it done for Mad Domi? Is Montreal even open to trading him?

Add a 2nd or a B prospect and you're probably there

I would probably be okay with that if I felt comfortable about getting an extension done with Domi

I don't think Jost needs a change of scene necessarily, I just don't think he's living up to expectations yet. Colorado has given him every opportunity to do so and he'd have a lot tougher times on other teams IMO. Saad would be a great fit for Colorado, I just don't know what kind of package would work for the Hawks. Obviously we'd love Byram or Compher, maybe something with Strome and Saad?

He's a restricted free agent and the Avs have a good amount of cap. would be pretty hard not to sign him even if he is offer sheeted

Don't underestimate how powerful term is when offer sheeting a player. A 3+ year offer sheet for a substantial sum puts the avs over a barrel when they have to re-sign Burakovsky, Makar, Landeskog, and Grubauer in the next two seasons.

Add a 1st and something else and maybe they listen but even then I doubt it, just don't see the Habs moving Domi.

Jost and Zadorov wouldn't move the needle at all for Bergevin to part with Domi.

Habs fan here. This proposal would make sense in a vacuum, but it doesn't in the context since MTL already has too many top 9 pieces, and Zadorov doesn't represent that much of an upgrade over Chiarot and Mete, not to mention that one of our top 3 LD prospects at the WJC - Romanov, Harris and Norlinder - could make the team as soon as next season.

A 1:many trade make sense for a rebuilding ans/or depth deprived team, and MTL is neither.

saad would be an interesting fit but no way Byram would even become available, neither would Timmins. They wouldn't for hall, sure won't for Saad.
Compher would be a tough one, dont think they would let him go if all they are getting back is 1.5 years of Saad, they would need to get more bc of the long term control of Compher with his contract.
Not sure what an actual trade would be like bw the teams

Jost is an interesting guy, he doesn't ever really look bad out there, he works hard, his progress is great, forechecks like crazy but just doesn't get points. I think thats just his game now, a quality 3rd liner who will eat minutes, won't hurt you out there but won't light up the score sheet. Sadly Avs need more than just a good guy who tries hard if they are going to take the next step to the Cup

I agree with grok. Sure, Colorado could throw money at him this summer and he can’t go to UFA. But they need to feel comfortable with how they think Domi’s next contract will fit into their overall salary structure with the other big free agents grok mentioned.

I definitely see your point. I supposed MTL would be more inclined to make a deal like this if they were getting the best player back? For example, Domi+ for a true top-pair LD?

Precisely. But who would that player be? Is COL willing to part with Byram or Girard?

Byram is as close to untouchable as he can be.
Girard-for-Domi is probably pretty fair in a vacuum, but the fact that Domi is a pending RFA and Girard is going into a 7x$5M deal gives Girard a nice bump. I doubt Colorado would want to shake up their long-term D core for what will end up being a secondary piece.
