Alexis Lafreniere vs Patrick Kane

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 29, 2019
Published: Dec. 29, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I don’t know why but I feel that if there’s going to be a surprise winner for the draft lottery, it’s the going to be the Hawks. Having Kane and Lafreniere on the same team is going to be insane. Imagine if they play on the same line.

Something I’d really like to know is how Lafreniere compares to Kane in terms of talent. Honestly, I think Alexis is the best player since McDavid and best winger since Kane. I don’t think he’s necessarily as smooth or flashy as Kane, but he’s definitely got great hands and is extremely capable of protecting the puck and drawing opponents. His hockey sense has got to be amongst the best I’ve ever seen. Just so effective and effortless at making plays both on and off the puck. His physical play and defensive game is similar to Mark Stone and Jamie Benn. I think he’s got all the tools to translate into the best winger in hockey.

What’d you guys think?

Shut the f*ck up bro. You’re delusional to compare that piece of sh*t Lafreniere to the greatest player ever Kane. Even if we draft him, I will still not give him credit. The dude is a joke of a player. Also, he suffered a career-ending knee injury yesterday.

Still going hard at it I see? rolling eyes

An article came out recently about Lafreniere, he talks aboit how Kane is his role model and he tries to base his game off Kane. Of all recent drats i would say that Lafreniere has the potential to reach Kane status but not for certain of course. As for the Hawks and the draft, I think they would be prefectly happy getting someone like Holtz. This is a verydeep draft in terms of skill and the entire top 5 might be able to step directly into the big league

McDavid & Lafreniere would be fun to watch together. Arguably the two best players of the next generation.

I can see similarities in the way he controls the puck although his stick handling isn’t as fast as Kane. The Hawks are projected to draft Holtz this year, who is excellent.

For sure regardless of him saying Kane is his role model they are different styles of players. I actually find it hard to draw a comparable player to him, hesa fairly big guy whos well rounded in most things, no immediate flaws besides being a winger. Giroux maybe? He was drafted as a winger

Lafreniere has got to be one of the most overrated players I’ve ever seen. I don’t understand what’s so impressive about the kid. He’s got no speed, no skill, no agility and no creativity. He’s only capable of delivering dirty hits. Can’t compare him to Caufield, who broke the record for most goals ever scored in the US National Development Program. He can shoot the puck from anywhere, by far the better player and it’s not even close. ‪Canadians love to hype up their players like they are the best, when clearly, the Americans are the one and only great hockey nation. ‬

I seriously can’t believe there are people that think Jaromir Jagr was a better player than Patrick Kane. Jagr was one of the most pathetic players I’ve ever seen. He had no talent, no skill and no creativity. He was extremely wasteful with the puck on his stick as he couldn’t dangle past anyone and always lost the puck. Jagr spent too much time having sex with women and speeding in his expensive cars. He did not do anything to make an impact on the ice.

Greatest of all time? Kane isn’t even the best RW to ever play. In fact, he’s not even better than Jagr.

Just a toxic troll. Report and ignore.

Giroux I think is a more smooth skater and he isn’t necessarily as physically intimidating as Lafreniere. I think his physical game is similar to Jamie Benn & Mark Stone. His offensive game has similarities to Crosby & Kane. Really good player all around.

I think Lafreniere will be a very good player, but some of the hype I'm seeing from fans (as opposed to scouts) is rather superfluous. Here's what leading scouts have to say:

Lafreniere’s one of those rare players where there’s really no one area in his game worth nitpicking. Sure, it would be ideal if he were a center. You’d like him to be a little more explosive than he is, too. Otherwise? It’s all there. His release is dangerous off of his front foot or his back foot, in motion or standing still. He’s strong on the puck and willing to use those puck protection skills to drive into dangerous areas. But he also has the playmaking ability to work from the outside-in if he gets caught on the perimeter. He can play fast or slow the game down and dictate pace and tempo. He’s physical along the wall, which helps him use pro size to win battles and escape with control. Is he going to be Sidney Crosby or Connor McDavid? No, but he’s probably going to factor in among the game’s best young wingers — the Mikko Rantanens and the Mitch Marners — fairly quickly. - Scott Wheeler

https://theathletic.com/1126042/2019/08/19/wheeler-preseason-look-at-the-top-31-prospects-for-the-2020-nhl-draft/

**********

Many scouts agree that Lafreniere doesn’t necessarily possess elite skill in any single category but is very good to great in so many of them that the total package simply can’t miss. However, one scout said his competitiveness and will to be great are elite and – combined with way-above-average hockey sense/vision and a strong skill set to score or make plays equally well – ensure he’s a blue-chip prospect. Another scout expressed reservations about Lafreniere's skating: “Speed, pace? His skating is good but not extraordinary. That’s something I’ll be watching.” - Bob Mackenzie

https://www.tsn.ca/lafreniere-leads-loaded-class-in-tsn-hockey-s-pre-season-draft-ranking-1.1364438

**********

Lafrenière is a truly gifted hockey player who just seems to get it. Tremendously smart all around, great skill, great scoring instincts and pushes play at both ends extremely well. His skating is awkward, but not slow, and he can control the flow of the game at his pace. At the NHL, it remains to be seen how that translates, but his overall talent and ability to find the scoresheet is unequivocally remarkable. - Will Scouch

https://www.scouching.ca/the-blog/scouchings-preliminary-2020-nhl-draft-rankings

**********

Lafreniere, the reigning QMJHL and CHL MVP is off to an expected great start to this season. He’s a player who can accomplish so much on the ice. He has elite skill and elite hockey sense. He can dangle defenders like few others, while also making incredible passes and scoring goals from a distance. He’s not a soft perimeter player, but he is a player who gets inside and has a competitive edge. His skating is not as great as the other aspects of his game, but he skates fine and overall projects to be a true star in the NHL. - Corey Pronman

https://theathletic.com/1289961/2019/10/15/pronman-2020-nhl-draft-ranking-the-top-prospects/

**********

This class starts at the top with Alexis Lafreniere, the presumed No. 1 for some time. His early season tear has helped reestablish his presumed dominance over the class, but the continual improvement and development of Quinton Byfield make him the most legitimate challenger right now. - Chris Peters

https://www.espn.com/nhl/insider/story/_/id/27896100/2020-nhl-draft-rankings-peters-updated-early-season-top-25-prospects

**********

Looking behind just stats, I’d put Lafrenière on a similar level to Auston Matthews. He seems to be a better prospect than someone like Jack Hughes, but he’s definitely a step below McDavid. - Sam Happi
