I think we keep him for a playoff push and then let him walk. I hoped we would be able to resign him at the start of the season, but with the emergence of Marino and Schultz not playing well, I just don't see him returning. Plus what he would ask for, won't be worth what he'd give the team anyways.

If he's not playing like he should, shouldn't he be asking for 750K less? 1 mil less even? About the same salary as right now?

Exactly. Nailed it with this one. No need to resign Schultz with Marino but no need to trade him. He’s an in house rental. Great bottom pairing guy

No he is looking for the big payday. If he were to get traded, the pens would have to trade for his replacement first. Like the whole Galchenyuk for Miller trades happening on this site.

Good teams don't worry about losing a player as UFA. They are gearing for the current playoffs. Besides the Pens still have the cache to attract other UFAs at fair or even below market price.

Im not sure where the not playing well part comes from. He's got a 52.2 corsi on the year, has only allowed 14 5v5 goals on the year.
That's really not all too bad.
He hasn't racked up points like he use to, but A. he's coming off an injury year, and B. he hasn't really had the kind of support you would like to see around him. Letang and Marino/dumo are getting most of the top line minutes on the year. With everyone always injured the 2nd and 3rd lines where Schultz has been getting minutes has been typically decimated. On top of it, their change in system has the D playing back more than they have in the past. Which is why the Penguins are 4th in goals against on they year. That isn't happening because they are getting bad defensive play.
