So a top 3 D in the league for a cap dump and not even good prospects, Columbus will trade you their 4th line for Austin Matthews.

Thoughts are that you aren’t even in the right ballpark, let alone the right country.... if you want something you’re going to have to pay. Matthews, Marner or Nylander+(one of Liljegren or Sandin) to get Jones.... quality over quantity....

If you truly believe he is difference maker for the next two and half years, yeah the Leafs or any team would want Jones. You know in his seven years in the NHL, he has won one playoff round. So is he truly that "key piece" you write about. Columbus doesn't do that deal. It really just Kapanen and 1st...nothing more for Columbus.

While you are correct this may not be enough. Jones is not a top 3 d in the league. That is just grossly overblown

Being quite possibly the biggest Nylander fan on the planet, I'd take that return all day!

Sorry 1000000% disagree, Top 3 D in the league on the best contract in the league, RD...........Plays PK and PP, 25 minutes a night, every night. Playoff monster! Can shut down first lines.

The classic pendulum reaction. You find this unfair so you swing it so far the other direction that you now sound equally as silly. Jones is great but come on, Marner + a top prospect is a joke. Jones is great and maybe I'd even be okay with Marner in a one for one but Matthews? That is just insane.

McDavid has only won 1 round as well, so i guess they're both not that impactful. Also Jones won a round his first year in Nashville.
But you are right that 4 of the 6 pieces don't carry a lot of value.

What do you mean by show, like to the playoffs 4 different times or to the cup final.

He's Morgan Rielly but shoots right, pretty much identical stats, far from Top 3 in the league

When Christian Djoos plays four or more games at right defense, the Washington Capitals have won every series. Doubt he's the magical difference-maker either, but if you're looking for a good luck charm and want to dump Kapanen...

I haven't been mesmerized by the Columbus and their great defence over the years ,,,Jones, Savard and Werenski plus years of Bobo in net. Where has it got them? I just don't know what the Leafs could give up that doesn't weaken them in other areas if they were to obtain a Jones or Jones type player. Come April...I assume CBJ are out of the playoffs, CBJ management might be thinking to trade Jones as he will have just two years till UFA

All depends on the team I'm building style of play, Alex Pietrangelo is up there, Parayko is up there, Ellis is up there, Josi is up there - yes Jones has wonderful contract so does Rielly would you trade Marner + for Rielly? Nope you wouldn't.
If CBJ is entertaining a rebuild which even if they are I would think Jones would be part of it but let's say he's not a 1st rnd a A+prospect and a young forward with top 6 potential would probably get the deal done

Pietrangelo is fantastic, i agree as well, Jones is 25 so if people want him they will have to grossly overpay because at the age of 25, that is a perfect keep for a rebuild, its not like he is 30

That is probably right. This is not that. If the offer is just "Kapanen, Liljegren, 1st?" Then the conversation is polite and reasonably upbeat, whatever the result. Is that a good idea for Toronto, long term? Depends. Maybe two out of three peieces end up better than Jones in five years. So it makes more sense for Toronto to just offer Nylander on a one for one, and move Kapanen up the lineup.

Agreed, I'll just steal him in 2 years when he's a FA, unless CBJ makes major strides into the postseason and is looking like a contender without Jones then as Jones I go shopping and Talk to teams that are already there and there will be 5/6 teams that are ahead of CBJ and will be willing to spend 9/10 million on him

Matthews is 22 and looks like under Keefe he's going to score even more than he was before. He already is the clear cut best 5v5 goal scorer in hockey. Jones is not worth a super elite young centre. End of discussion
