Brandon Saad Discussion

Description
Brandon Saad is what he is. He is not an elite goal scorer, not a playmaker, not a high skill guy. But what he is is a really good power forward who drives play and makes smart decisions. He plays hard, he wins pucks, and he goes to the front of the net. A very direct comparison is Kevin Hayes. Hayes has 3 more assists on the season and 1 more goal through 3 more games played, Brandon Saads Corsi is and has been higher for every season he has been in the league. Maybe there is hope he gets back to that 30 goal season he had in Columbus, but realistically he is a solid 20 goal 40-50 point guy who drives play and gets to the front of the net. Although he is not a center, he is also not a complete rental, and he has an extra year of control after this one, but at a higher cap hit than Hayes did (although with LTIR the blackhawks can easily take half of that.) So all in all, atleast in my mind, Saad should fetch a return similar to that of Hayes (1st rounder, Lemieux, conditional 4th) although probably a little bit lower, maybe remove the extra player or the conditions on the draft pick, but saying Saad is a garbage player and wont fetch anything on the market is just flat out incorrect, based on historical trades and performance. Now, it remains to be seen whether the Blackhawks will actually want to trade him, as they insist they will contend every year (which is wrong) and Brandon Saad is a great middle six player on a contending team, but he is not a top line guy

With how tight contending teams are with the cap even with retention Hawks may need to take a contract back. I could see the Leafs being interested I'm sure they'd love 2 Hymans but probably not at 6 million.
Johansson the 2021 1st and Bracco for Saad with 2.6 retained

Idk. I never think its a good idea for a team to trade a 1st for a year away (See Ottawa and now SJ) and the draft this year, while deep, kind of falls off after the top 20. I think last years draft had more notable players falling to the late 20s and 30s like Suzuki, Kaliyev, and Brink, all who are still outstanding, and I have no idea how deep the 2021 draft is going to be. Any kind of 1st would probably be good for a "retooling" team

Id definitely be on board for that, don't know if the Leafs would be though

Leaf fans value Johansson high but doubt management does, Saad would be a nice addition to get Puck's for JT and Nylander

Also a guy who can play PK and PP2. He is the type of player you want on the ice during the last few minutes of the game to protect the lead.

People love bashing him on this site. Love saying he is overpaid. Overpaid by what, MAYBE a mill? So therefore, he is absolutely worthless in their eyes. I appreciate your take, because people bashing Saad is rather annoying on here.

I think your return idea is very close. Could be less than Hayes return but Saad has that extra year so who knows.

Yeah, return would probably depend on the team

Saad is a guy who we would never get a good return for. How Hawks fans value him is just too far off from how everyone else values him, so I think the best course of action is to keep him. Trade away guys on expiring contracts and let that be all we do.

Idk. I don't think it would be fair to him to keep saying "yes we are going to be competing next year" when realistically the best course of action is to trade everyone who probably won't be on the roster for the next time we are competitive, which includes Saad, Gus, maybe Crawford depending on if he wants to resign for cheap and low term. With there being only 3 guys that will actually yield a positive return, I think its best to stockpile picks and prospects and hope the young core turns out, because there isn't really anything we can do with this current roster.
