Forwards Making more than Willy Nylander

Description
Remember that time that everyone was ripping Dubas for signing Nylander to a "terrible" contract? Remember when everyone and their dog was trying to trade Nylander for a 3rd pairing defenceman. Turns out he is actually pretty good, and is more than playing up to his contract.
I know that there are a lot of variables here such as age and contracts signed from RFA status vs UFA status. And I know there are players that give far more than just their point total (O'Reilly, Toews, Getzlaf, Wheeler, Giroux).
Just goes to show that Nylander is actually a pretty good hockey player, and there are a lot of forwards that make more than Nylander that have less points than him.

Love this thread. I'm a wings fan and would trade almost any player or prospect with a few exceptions for him. He's on Pace for 35 goals and has just been so good,

I bet hardly any of those trolls respond. Just hiding in the shade of their bridges.

Nylander's actual average salary is 7.5 mil per year. The cap hit is lower due to the higher first year as a result of the mid season signing. If he had signed before the season started the cap hit would have been the 7.5 mil per year.

So is his cap hit 6.9 or 7.5? (honest question). Even if it's 7.5 mil per year, I don't think that changes my argument very much.

His cap his is 6.9 million, splitting hairs doesn't help you at all. Plus he's pretty close to a point a game player now and is really rolling with Tavares. Good luck

Cap hit is 6.9 this year but the actual average salary is 7.5. The difference is due to mid season signing that saw a 10mil cap hit the first season of the deal. Your right though it does not change your argument much. I am not arguing he is not worth it. Just pointing out that he is actually paid slightly more than a lot of the ones you have listed above.

Doesn't matter at all. Cap hit is everything in the cap world. If anything it makes him even more valuable

Yep, I was one that criticized the contract. At the time of signing and to all RFA comparables, 7m X 6 years was an overpay.

No... his cap hit in year one was 6.96m and it stayed that way throughout. The exaggerated cap hit in year one stops a team from saving cap.

Games played x daily cap hit = 6.96m for every season in his contract.

If he signed the deal before the season started - his cap hit would have been 7.5 million a year. (45 million contract / 6)

If he was not a RFA and signed the deal when he did his cap hit for years 2 to 6 would have been 7.5 million per year with 4.26 million cap hit in year 1 which is the adjusted amount for the prorated season making the actual contract in real dollars 41.76 million rather than the 45 million.

But since he was a RFA mid season signing his cap hit to the team in year 1 the prorated cap hit was as you say the 6.96 million (10.2 million prorated). The 6.96 is the 41.26 actual real dollar contract / 6 years.

There is actually a similar rule for ufa’s as well.

As far as money paid to nylander and dollars counted toward cap it is a 6.96m x 6 contract.

Calling it anything else would be like calling the jimmy shuldt signing a 6.5m contract.
