There is zero way the Leafs would ever make this deal. Yes McDavid is the best player in the league but he isn't better than Nylander and Matthews combined. The problem with moving McDavid is no matter what you are going to lose the trade. The only hope is you get another franchise centre and enough futures as well that you may have a future beyond him. However, no one would pay a price like this, its counter productive and on top of that, if the Oilers were moving McDavid it would be at his request at which time, you lose so much negotiating power. If he wants out, it'll be after his NMC kicks in July 2021. He's going to give a small list of teams he'd go to and then you have to hope that one of them can give you a decent return. It'll be big, no question but it won't be anything remotely close to this. I'd wager getting McDavid for Matthews and a 1st may be the absolute best offer you'd get for McDavid and I am not sure I'd even offer that much. McDavid is better, no question, but TO doesn't need him, so why pay full price for something you don't need?

This is a very accurate assessment IMO.

I mean this as genuinely as possible, I don't want to see that happen for the sake of all Oiler fans. It will crush their fan base. They have the best player in the world and Chiarelli absolutely destroyed the team, he did nothing right apart from signing Draisaitl to his contract. Everything else he did was terrible and now the Oilers need to somehow find half a roster worth of players to make them a contender. Its almost an impossible task and the pressure on Holland to make it all work is insane. What is he supposed to do? Keep spending $100 on $10 bandaids to patch million dollar problems and end up in the exact position they are now? I hope he can convince both Draisaitl and McDavid to be okay with selling off anything they can outside of those two, losing a tonne for the rest of this season and possibly next and hope they can get enough young talent to come back in Fall 2021 as an up and coming team.

Thats all in the past. Imagine having the best player in the world, and then having management so terrible that they run him out of town and get a poor return when it happens. Chiarelli would never be able to show his face in Edmonton again. There will be outrage. Imagine being the GM who has to trade a disgruntled McDavid for pennies on the dollar because you have no choice? It will be a dark time in Alberta if that happens.

I agree with all of that except.... I would add the ONLY other good thing chia did was sign McJesus to his contract and if they can keep Nurse that would help although, he'd bring back a decent haul.

Signing McDavid was a no brainer. He's the best player in the world. Only an idiot would mess that up and try to low ball him. It was like when Ovie signed his first contract after his ELC. He fired his agent and just signed a max deal, its what was going to happen anyways. Its the same with Dubas in TO, are Marner, Tavares, Matthews or Nylander every going to be problems because of their salaries? Not at all, they are all stars that carry the play. What the Leafs have done that Edmonton just can't seem to do, is surround their stars with wave after wave of really good players. Sure they have so much more money that they can put into player development but still, Edmonton just doesn't have depth. They need to put all the resources they can into player development and hope they can turn about 6 of their prospects into good depth guys. If they can't, man are things going to get ugly.

That was my point, Chiarelli got him to take less and I give him credit for that.

That isn't what happened, McDavid said so himself. Chiarelli offered him 13 and McDavid went back and said lets make it less so I can be a team player. Which is hilarious that 500K was made out to be such a bargain.

Would you trade Matthews for Scheifele, Laine and Heinola? Cause that's as "fair" of a trade. You see, the issue is no one wants to downgrade at 1C, and even if a trade would be worth it in theory, it's super hard to go through with it in practice. How does Edmonton make up that cap space? That will cost them resources, so that lowers the value of the trade for them. That means Toronto would have to give up more to make it worth it for Edmonton. That's why these trades don't happen.
