Description

The Leafs signing of Justin Holl to a three extension at $2 million per year last week was a home run by Kyle Dubas and the Leafs and solidifys the Leafs defence for years going forward. Holl has emerged as a comeback player of the year after being scratched 71 times last year and is now playing nearly 20 minutes a night after being elevated by Sheldon Keefe to a shut down defenceman for the Leafs. Holl developed into one of the best defenseman in the AHL under Keefe with the Marlies. The signing is an absolute home run for the Leafs as it stabilizes the Leafs defence for years to come by ensuring a solid young core of Reilly, Dermott and Holl with Sandin and Liljegren soon to join them. This may prove to be Kyle Dubas's most important signing to date and gives the Leafs lots of options to resign some of their or other team's UFA defencemen in the future as the Leafs become legitimate contenders for the Cup. The Holl signing is a bargain and gives the Leafs alot of flexibility for years to come.

Not sure I'd say a homerun, more like a double that cashes in a couple of runs. Very good signing and I'm happy for Holl, well deserved.

Honestly no. A competent NHL defenseman who can play over 17 minutes not on an ELC costs you 1.5 million. You basically don't get signed as a UFA defenseman for a spot above "fighting to be in the lineup" for less than 1.5 million.

Not a huge difference. It is really hard to ped down his value as he is in such a unique spot. As a UFA he could have targetted Jensen's deal as a comparable at 2.5.

I figured hed be between 1.5-2.5 on a 3-4 year deal. It's a win-win contract.

If he ends up being a third pairing dman, 2 million for a non ELC dman is fine, if he remains a 2nd pairing it's a damn bargain. If he flames out he's waived and were on the hook for about 850k (I believe the amount covered by waiving next year is just above 1.1 mil)

For Holl he could go out and try to get a bigger payday off this very good contract year (a proven 20 minute per night Rd in UFA would get 3-4 mil, his situation is obvious unique but he could see what he could get). In exchange for accepting 3rd pairing money he bought himself 3 years security when he wasn't in the NHL 2 years ago.
