Tyson Jost

Description
I think it’s becoming more and more apparent that Tyson Jost may not have a a long term future with the Avalanche. As the forward group has come together over the last couple of years, he’s had a hard time carving out a consistent role. Right now Jared Bednar has him on the fourth line, and he is on pace for another 10-12 goal, 25-30 point season. Those are respectable numbers for a 3rd/4th line player, but not what you would expect from a former top 10 pick. He’s still only 21years old though, and I think he’s a player who could legitimately benefit from a change of scenery. He should have significant trade value for a team that could give him an opportunity to play in a top 9 role - especially if he’s at center, where he’s been much better than at wing.

Between the Hall conversation last month and the more recent Kreider rumors, Colorado appears to be after another top six forward. I also think a high-end third line center could make sense.

If Jost is the centerpiece of the return, which teams would be the best trade partners, and who could the Avalanche realistically go get to improve their forward group?

I think that the most realistic option for Jost would be a change of scenery type trade for another young player in a similar situation. Guys like Lias Andersson, Puljujarvi and Bennett come to mind.

I don't know if anyone values him enough to give up a bonafide top 6 guy for him though.

I don’t think a Bennet/Andersson/Puljajarvi helps Colorado much. I agree that Jost won’t fetch a top six forward on his own. My point is that if Colorado is going after an upgrade at forward, why not make Jost the centerpiece of the return while he still has some value. Basically, what can Colorado reasonably get for Jost+?

Oh I see, in that case probably a guy like Tatar, Kreider or Granlund seem most likely. Cost would probably be around a 1st or 2nd + Jost for Tatar and Kreider, not sure on value for Granlund though.

I would like to see Puljujarvi reunited with Rantanen, might get to see the guy EDM thought they were getting when they drafted him.

There have been some people, myself included, who have suggested Jost and s second for Kreider, maybe a condition if Kreider resigns.

I agree, Jost is just a better version of Bennet/Andersson/Puljajarvi, why downgrade the guy you need to be patient with

I really hope they could pry Athanasiou from Detroit with a Jost+ deal. Athanasiou is struggling this year so his value would be less than most and hes been a pain in the butt for Detroit to do contracts with, he is an RFA this offseason so maybe they dont want to deal with him again

Jost needs some time to develop as a center which is why he was drafted in the first place. Some players just are better at center and can't convert to a wing position.

I think Kreider would be a really good addition. I wonder if David Quinn would rather have Bowers back than Jost, since he coached him at BC.

He would be a really interesting add. He has a lot of qualities that they seem to value (speed, skill, etc.). I also like his versatility to play center. Hopefully you could buy low on him, and I would be curious to see Sakic and Yzerman make a trade. My concern would be that his offensive game is similar to Kadri and Burakovsky, and they may cannibalize each other’s opportunities and production, rather than complimenting each other.

I agree with you. I think he was rushed out of college and they put him at wing initially to protect him a bit. Then he was never able to establish a firm role or position and got caught in that “second line” blender of forwards with Compher, Kerfoot, Wilson, Andrighetto, etc. over the previous couple of seasons. He was often the odd man out and ended up on the fourth line. Now that the Avs imported half of their current top six, Jost has been stuck in a floating bottom six role again. Granted, he hasn’t exactly elevated his game when he has had opportunities to jump into the top six.
