Yes very likely. Won't be able to resign Holtby and with the cap space left you won't get a starter. Think Samsonov - Copley will be the goalie tandem next year

Just because Holtby won't be resigned doesn't automatically mean Samsonov will be the starter... He's either ready or he isn't. If he isn't then they'd have their work cut out for them this off season. I didn't know if Samsonov was ready which was the purpose of this post.

I guess it all depends on how much the cap will rise. Caps don't have a lot of big expiring contracts. Backstrom will get a raise. I think they'll try ro resign all players except Holtby. If the cap rises enough they could go for Halak or Khudobin to get a good back-up for like 32-40 starts to get some pressure of Samsonov

Samsonov is 11-2-1 with a 2.33gaa and a .918sa%. I’d say he’s as ready as he’s ever going to be. I like the halak signing bc it can’t hurt to have a solid Vet to back him up.

Capitals have 2 nhl ready LHD prospects so I honestly see them moving kempny in the offseason for a forward or a 2nd round pick (hopefully) that would open up some cap space. Or pay the the Bäckström raise

I think Hotlby is done as Capital after this season.
Question is, is Backstorm too?

No. He got 15 starts so far, Holtby 29. Holtby had a slow start in the beginning of the season so they kinda split games back then. But Holtby found his game so Samsonov isn't getting a lot of starts lately

Holtby isn't playing well the last couple of weeks, so he's back to a cold streak. He's become very streaky, and it's unfortunate, because you don't know which Holtby you're going to get, good Holtby or poopoo Holtby.

Samsonov is 110% the starter come fall 2020. I'd bet at least $5 on it. I'd also not be surprised if Copley is the backup, although they might try to acquire a solid veteran instead depending on what happens with the cap this off-season.

Yes it's insane how such a talented goalie has become such a streaky goalie. Started during the season when the Caps eventually won the Cup. He's not the reliable goalie he used to be.

And I can see Copley be the back-up too (like I said here earlier at this post. If they have some cap space after extending players like Backstrom, I can see them going after a player like Halak or Khudobin. But Copley is a very cheap back-up and good option

Holtby's Sv% splits this season (# of starts)

Oct: .888 (10)
Nov: .928 (10)
Dec: .884 (9)
Jan: .893 (1)

Samsonov's

Oct: .913 (4)
Nov: .914 (4)
Dec: .927 (4)
Jan: .927 (1)

Washington is already the best team in the league. Imagine how good they'd be if they started Samsonov in half the games?
