Future of the Leafs - Part 1

Description
Signing one of our big name D (Muzzin or Barrie) will cripple us for the following year when we need to sign Rielly and Andersen. I think a better option is taking a guy like Shattenkirk on a 1 year deal so that we get the cap back the following year.

Mikheyev is a weird case. Almost no comparable for a guy like him. I could be way off but a 1 year deal at $2M seems appropriate.

I used to think that Dermot would get a deal similar to this but after seeing Holl get 2 million its going to be hard pressed for Dermott to be able to argue he deserves more. Holl has been better this season. Also Shattenkirk sucks.

I agree that Holl has been better, but they play different styles. Holl is a 1 dimensional player where as Dermott has a more well rounded game with more to offer. Add that to the fact that Holl is arguably in his prime where Dermott should be expected to improve throughout his contract I think he will get somewhere in the range of $3-3.5M on his deal this summer.

I'm guessing Shattenkirk is probably not happening. And I hope it doesn't, but they will need to sign a D to play in their top 4. Their forward depth is ridiculously good when all are healthy, so maybe we see Dubas move a forward for a D with some term instead of overpaying a UFA or going bargain hunting. If Dermott gets $3.5m it better be for 8 years. He plays 5-8 minutes less a night than Holl and usually against 3rd/4th lines compared to the tougher minutes Holl has taken on. I think we'll see a fair 2 year bridge deal around $2m per year. It will be interesting to see if Spezza comes back. He filled a need this past summer to add some C depth, but with the play of some of the younger guys the last month he would only be taking a spot that could easily be filled by Brooks/Gauthier. Best case, Leafs win the cup this year and Spezza retires a champion!

Maybe if its longer term but I can also see him getting a 2 year deal around 2 million each year and hope that he can produce more offense and warrant a bigger deal. I don't think either Holl or Dermot are ever going to be much as far as offensive players. Both are very good two way guys. Holl is definitely not one dimensional. He's a good puck mover and a very good skater.

A 2/3 year bridge deal will see Dermott around 2/3 million per , Leafs could go for a 5 year deal if they believe he is a second pairing at 4.5 million per

I could see a shorter bridge deal happening at similar value. For 3 years or more though he will get more than Holl

Maybe, we'll see how the rest of the year shakes out.
