The fabled cap crunch

Created by: GenXHockey

Description
So leafs on this scenario have 6.7m to spend on a Dman. They could easily move two left handed forwards and have more space. Maybe even sign longer term deals for engvall and Souperman. My idea here was engvall signs his QO to bet on himself.

I can’t see them moving Kapanen. Kills penalties and defensively reliable. He could be replaced by Hyman but after that we have little for defensive minded RHW.

Not to worry... I am working on another one right now.

More likely Johnsson.

Also, I feel like Dermott's contract is a bit high, and Engvall is a bit low. Take 500k from Dermott and give it to Pierre.

2021-22 looks a little scary in this world. TOR are looking at expiring contracts for Zacha, Andersen, Mikheyev, the backup, and the entire fourth line with just 12m plus the cap increase.

Leafs send kerfoot to Seattle and move engvall to centre and Robertson comes up. Leafs go with Woll... We could debate this to 2046 if you would like. The fact is that players move around, contracts get shuffled and caps rise. Everyone always tries to make having too many good players an issue on this site.

Ah, my bad. But Dermott still seems a bit high to me

Could very well be. I just try to plug in reasonable numbers. Guessing contracts are difficult due to term.

What a weirdly confrontational response. I raised a concern, you gave an interesting answer. That could have been it if you didn't feel like being a snarky dickhead.

Leaving Andersen and Kerfoot exposed makes Toronto an interesting target, but does Toronto let Andersen go if he doesn't get picked in the expansion draft? He's still a full .010 above average on an offense-first team

It came out snarkier than How I meant it. Maybe the leafs do re sign Andersen. Not sure if it is wise to throw big money at an aging goaltender. It will certainly depend on his ask.

Leafs had one massive cap crunch. They don’t have any in the foreseeable future. If I gave you the leafs numbers for contracts before this season and a list of players to be moved I don’t think many people would have thought it possible. I don’t look at crunches as a bad thing. It usually means players habe exceeded expectations.

Shattenkirk would be pretty affordable and would fit in the Leafs system perfectly. 4-4.5x4 maybe. Also trading for Alec Martinez might be a good option and if you play your cards right, LA might just retain half of his contract.

Do you really think Woll will be backup or is that just placeholder?

I agree with everything you're saying, I just find it interesting to continue the discussion when there's more contract questions on the horizon. Appreciate the responses
