Making a Williams signing work

Created by: staytru20
Team: 2019-20 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 7, 2020
Published: Jan. 7, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Caps currently have $356,397 in cap space, which shows as an overage on the year start cap hit that ACGM uses. Sending down Djoos (when he's healthy again) and Boyd frees up plenty of cap to sign Williams to a 1 year, $2M deal that would be prorated, which would allow the Caps more flexibility at the deadline to have another skater on the roster.

Bit of a cap squeeze, with just six defensemen. Better Williams at 2M for nothing than Toffoli at 3M for a 1st, though, with the same cap issues. Could get a 4th for Leipsic if they really want to solve the cap.

If he isn’t signing for cap minimum I don’t want him honestly. He’s going to steal a spot from a guy more deserving.

At league minmum, they might get Vanek.

I know the report said Boston, Washington and Tampa also for Williams. We have the least cap room I think. I can't see a way we do this just because of that.

Vanek is interesting though.

Vanek's four years younger and just hasn't been as good in the playoffs. But they've had different linemates, different teams. it's tough to compare. At just 34, Vanek's more likley to take a discount to audition with a contender, in the hopes of earning 3-4M next year, somewhere else.

Still, with all the trades Tampa and Boston fans are trying to make on here, they might not end up with 2M of cap space between them, so if it's down to those three, and WSH bids a number that lets them keep a 7th defenseman, it could happen.

If not, and if WSH just want to make a splash and get an old guy who used to be great, SJ seems to be rebuilding, so maybe Leipsic for Marleau.

Capitals have a stacked lineup. So much that Boyd is often a healthy scratch. So much that Stephenson , a 4th line player, is Vegas 2nd best center. We are fine

Haha a 38 year old that hasn’t played an nhl game since last playoffs. How could that go wrong?
