I will never understand why people are selling low on AA... 30 goal scorer last year, 25 yrs old, and still an RFA at the end of this year... makes less than zero sense to trade him right now, especially for a rebuilding team that won't be good for a few years yet at least.

For a 1st I would do it. Anything less, I wouldn't. And right now, I don't think we can get a 1st for him. So the answer is pretty simple to me. I think if he gets moved this deadline, it will be in some sort of "hockey trade"

That was my point, but I wasn't very clear. With the season he's had so far, his value is at a low point. So you won't get any less for him next year than you would right now. Keep him and resign him this offseason (which, the contract should be reasonable considering his poor year) and see what he does next year, then revisit the possibility of trading him

Can I get an explanation as to why Edmonton trades arguably their best defenseman and a first round pick for a third line forward, two struggling young players and a guy with a very limited NHL future?

That Edmonton trade is a giant no , thats not a great trade. I dont love giving hirose away but panic can atleast play all over the line up and a 1st rounder is nice.
