I think he gets a bad rep that is undeserved. He was ordered to make the playoffs at all costs and did what he could until finally ownership said we need to rebuild and then Sundin and company refused to waive their no trade clauses. It wasn't entirely his fault. Its hard to tell what he would have been able to do if he was able to do his thing.

JFJ had to deal with the start of the salary cap era in the NHL, and we all know what the Leafs and Quinn did to the player budget with their aging roster. Now it's the opposite with Dubas, he had a very cheap young talented team and he is the one blowing up the player budget.

That is the era Dubas lives in, young players contribute more and the cap is higher. I agree that JFJ got a raw deal, mainly because owner ship wanted to win no matter what but your thoughts on Dubas are just out to lunch. Anyone that doesn't see future problems with those short term Bridge deals signed over the summer is just willfully ignoring what those are going to mean. They will 100% not mean guys like Tkachuk sign in 3 years for 9 million a year for 8 years. They are going to want huge money and term. Look at Meier and tell me his deal is anything short of terrible. He had 1 30 goal 60 point season and he's going to make 10 million when his contract is up or walk to FA. His QO will be 10 million. What's Laine going to demand on his next deal when the US TV deal and Seattle expansion both add revenue to the league? Remember when everyone said Nylander was overpaid and should be making 3.5 million? What a joke that was. Dubas had been terrific. The ones that don't see that still think if you are a huge and rough team you can win. How is that working out for LA?

Nylander has always been compared with other guys from his Draft: low $6's - Elhors and Larkin, mid $6's - Pastranek and Nylander's agent favorite - Draisaitl (mid $8). Would have been nice not to have Nylander have his 1 season entry level slide and he could have signed in the same summer as Elhors and Larkin but Nylander can be a $7 player with the Elite center, take away the Elite center and the Leafs got a Elhors skill/money value level player.

Dubas $47 million Top 6 forward group compared to the $18 million Top 6 Dman group is totally whacked out.

For now but it's all relative. They'll have a good defence that'll be young and cheap. The stars will never be the problem they don't have any bad contracts because they don't have anyone that can't produce enough to justify their contracts. They don't have a Seabrook, or Lucic on their roster that is just dead cap weight

If the Leafs lose in the 1st Rd again for the next 2 years, no matter how well Dubas was by avoiding dead cap space and signing talent, he'd be fired.

They won't lose. They are a very good team and their offence is so good. At 5v5 they are going to score more than they allow more often than not.
