Seeing Whether Ristolainen Fits

Created by: OldNYIfan
Team: 2019-20 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 8, 2020

Description
Buffalo has 45 points through 43 games, so would probably have to record 52 points in the remaining 39 contests, or average 1.333 points per game -- a pace only Washington, Boston, St Louis, Pittsburgh and the Islanders achieved in the first half. And the Sabres don't much resemble any one of those teams. Therefore, I think it's time for them to give up on this season and acquire some future assets.

One player that might get Buffalo a nice return is Risto Ristolainen. One natural destination for him would seem to be Dallas, the most offensively challenged contender in the West. (Only the hapless California teams scored fewer goals through 41 games.) Another possibility is Arizona, but the Coyotes may not have a first-round pick until 2022, so I'm trying out the Stars here.

These defense pairings seem reasonable to me, but there is a question about the lineup once John Klingberg is ready to return.

Comments on my lines would be gratefully accepted.

On a side note: CapFriendly says that Dallas has nine (9!) LhD prospects in the system. That seems like a lot to me.

Most likely it will be the late first of 2021 and the prospect of RD, which we do not really need, we have a lot of defensive prospects in system. Risto has improved this season, even if we trade it, it will most likely be for help in the top 6 or we can just leave it and our defense in the next season will be solid.

The assumption here is that the offer of a first (even a 2021 first) might be irresistible. I would understand completely, of course, if Botterill manages to restrain himself.

That is an entirely sensible position.

I think it's top 6 center/rw or bust. Botterill has traded for 2 firsts, one was pick 29, the other was pick 31. Trading for future firsts has simply not worked for us. Plus a futures package may just be setting his replacement up.

Yes, if they decide to bring him up. He hasn't played in more than a year, and Dallas may decide to let him rehab for another 15 games or so.
