I was expecting a bridge deal here, but to sign their best defense prospect at this low an AAV is a smart move. One more year of growth and this could have much more costly. This will be a value contract we all talk about in 3/4 years.

Shortening my other post: They are pretty much overpaying him next year for a 5 year discount. Flames have had lots of negative attention lately, this is a smart move to put them in good light.

This deal is what Florida thought they were doing with the Ekblad deal.

Perhaps. Long term defense deals don't fail that often (*caugh* seabrook extension). Even ekblad isn't really considered an overpay.

for the sake of the post though, florida is a pretty good laughingstock

Long term deals for RFAs usually end up being pretty good. UFA deals end up being poo.

You can't be wrong signing a 23yo dman entering his prime, but 6years and only 4.55M per year is a crazy good deal for the Flames.

He hasn't earned it yet but I like his potential upside. Will be interested to see if he can live up to this deal

Full disclosure: I'm not an Andersson fan after his cowardly cross-check of an Anaheim player prone on the ice, but I'm not the guy who voted No.

Much as I hate to admit it, this is a core signing for the Flames. Absent injury, he'll be a top-pairing defenseman for Calgary for the entirety of this contract.

I like Anderson but he hasn't earned this type of contract. , yet. He's a decent defenseman who could grow into this contract, but It should have been slightly less.

He’s good, but I think it’s a bit risky, but that seems to be an unpopular opinion here

Solid early career signing at this point for term at a reasonable AAV. No reason to believe he will regress and his cap hit will look more like a steal with each passing year.

$6,800,000 = Giordano
$5,000,000 = Hanifin
$4,500,000 = Andersson
$1,000,000 = Valimaki
$6,000,000 = Brodie ????????
$6,000,000 = Hamonic ????????
$2,000,000 = Kylington ????????
$1,200,000 = Stone (Buyout)
-----------------
$32,500,000 = Total Defense Cap-Hit

Can Calgary handle a $10,000,000 cap increase?
Their defense only costs $22,500,000 this year.

People who vote "no" on deals like this have absolutely no foresight.

That's a yikes from me. 12 points in 45 games. 5th lowest TOI/Game for defensemen on Calgary and he has a -11 to go with that. Calgary is going to regret this one in the short term future.

Don't know where you come with this signing of Brodie and Hamonic. They're UFAs, not the Flames to sign. All teams have to pay their RFA more once players exit their ELCs. Expensive UFAs are the ones that leave.

He's young, talented, but this is probably an overpay for the next year or two. I guess the hope is that he plays up to it and it ends up being a steel.

It doesn't always work out. Olli Maatta is a one case where injuries wrecked his ability to develop into what everyone thought he was going to be.

Cool. But what's his prime going to be? We don't know yet. He's been an ok third pairing guy that is pretty much a black hole on offense. Is he going to get better? Sure. But how much better?

So yeah, you can have a different opinion on whether this deal is good or not.

With Brodie, Hamonic and Stone all looking like they’re going to walk next season this was a smart deal for the flames. Andersson is going to be an important part of Calgary’s defensive core long-term. Now they just need to get Kylington signed long-term

Are they going with 8 Dmen and 10 forwards on your planet?
