NSH OTT Trade Deadline

Created by: slapshot723
Team: 2019-20 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 9, 2020
Published: Jan. 10, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Isles-Predators

Islanders acquire Mikael Granlund, a top-6 scorer who can play C and RW. With Derick Brassard having more success at wing with being a natural center, it'd be good for the Isles to get a guy he can swap with depending on performance.

Predators acquire Michael Dal Colle, a league minimum paid young LW, and a guy who could have some success on another team. Predators are weak at left-handed LW, so he'd be a good organizational fit. Predators also acquire veteran LHD Thomas Hickey. who should be in the NHL but isn't because of Dobson's ELC situation. Nashville doesn't have great depth at LHD in the organization beyond this year with Hamhuis and Irwin becoming free agents. Hamhuis and Irwin can be replaced with Hickey and Tinordi for them next year. Because they're taking Hickey's contract, Preds get a 2020 1st round pick instead of a lower pick.

Isles-Senators

Since the Isles get a center in the Predators deal, this trade is meant to acquire a couple of depth players that can help balance out the roster. Tyler Ennis has had a really nice year, and can play a 3rd line scoring role. If he struggles, he can rotate with Leo Komarov, Ross Johnston, and Tom Kuhnkackl (especially when Clutterbuck comes back healthy). Mark Borowiecki can replace Adam Pelech, and can rotate in and out with Dobson depending on performance. He's had a very good year for his standards, and can play in a pinch when toughness is needed.

Senators acquire a young project in Josh Ho-Sang. Even though he's struggled with the Islanders, he has had moderate success and can use a change of scenery. The Senators can play him for the rest of the season and see what they have in him. Ottawa also acquires a couple of prospects (RHD David Quenneville and G Linus Soderstrom), and a 2020 3rd round pick.

I think the Ottawa trade is an overpayment, but I like the ideas

There are better options than Ennis and Borowecki. If there is a trade with Ottawa it needs to be fore Tierney or Pagaeu to address the C need.

Nashville probably isn't making trades until they see if their new coach can turn the team around.

I'm not sure NSH want 3 years of Hickey at $2.5 even if they get a 1st back. They are tight against the cap next year

They need to let dobson get in a rhythm - Dobson > borowiecki. Aho is fine as the 7D

I think Granlund is on his way out regardless..

Sending the Nashville package to Ottawa for Tierney would make more sense.

Sens fan here. We take it and run. It is an overpayment on the isles part because teams won't be bidding on Boro or Ennis.

Pageau, on the other hand, playoff bound teams will be looking for that kind of 3C. Same with Tierney.

The other issue is Ottawa would have no need for someone like Soderstrom. We have 4 young goalies in the pipe right now. Quenneville and Ho-Sang would be cool though,

I'd rather have Borowiecki as the 7th D than Aho. I think he'd bring the toughness/defensive element we're losing from Pelech. Aho is good but doesn't provide that. Borowiecki is also an NHL defenseman, Aho isn't a full-time one yet. In the playoffs, Borowiecki will be much more valuable than Aho.

There definitely are other options out there, but these guys would come cheap. I didn't trade for Tierney or Pageau here because I got Granlund, who is a C/RW.

I looked at NSH's cap situation next year and it looked like they could afford Hickey pretty easily. What if NYI took Steve Santini back if money was a concern?

Well, I would also want a top-6 forward, but from a value perspective that would be good for NYI too. I just don't know if we can afford Tierney's new contract since we have a few core guys needing new contracts.

Well NSH will have just under $12m to work with next year before they sign any of their UFAs or RFAs, or any July 1 UFAs. They need 8 roster players - 3 forwards, 2 defenseman, and 3 reserve to have a 23 man roster for next year. If we assume half are ELC or <$1m we can say that they will now have around $8.5m to sign players. If you add in Hickey's $2.5, then they are at $6m for 3 players. That is not awful, but pretty tight if they are trying to compete. That means that they cannot make any big free agent signings and they really need a top 6 winger. Taking back the Santini contract doesn't really matter because only around $300,000 of his contract counts against his cap if he is buried in the minors. I don't think it's an awful trade, I just don't think the Preds want to pay $2.5m for the next two years for a 6/7 defenseman when they are in win-now mode.

This will sound like I'm a homer but I'm really not: Ottawa would get a better return trading Borowiecki and Ennis separately to different teams. Straight up 3rd for Ennis and a 4th for Borowiecki. I'd rather see them do that. Ho-Sang is another Curtis Lazar. Wins some you lose some.

Would you do a 3rd and 5th in 2020 and a 4th in 2021 for Ennis and Borowiecki? No prospects.

Yeah, I'd think about a deal like that. I just think those guys are good depth. Other deals would need to be made by NYI, but I like both of these players for the makeup of NYI.

I think Pageau would be an incredibly good fit too but I understand that he is likely going to cost more than you guys want to be giving up as such a young team. It makes sense to let the teams taking their last shot overpay. HOPING THEY WILL!
