The year is 2200. It's been 40 years since the bombs dropped. The earth was scorched in a war no one remembers the point of. In a desolate hole in the now permanently frozen north, a voice could be heard whispering from the shadows:

"Marty Marincin has signed a contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs"

The war was likely a result of MarMar bobbling the big red button, like everything else he touches...

Filler for the Marlies and a callup that probably gets through waivers. Yawn.

People are making a huge deal of this lmao.

Literally signed him to be the 7th or 8th defenceman.
If they want to send him down, they can. He will clear waivers.

Signed him now rather than later, before the cap and minimum salary goes up.
So he is going to be getting less than league min if he is even in the NHL.

He is fine as a 7th or 8th dman for less than league min

But not though.. compared to last season Holl is far more valuable now that he is a hockey player and not a hockey practicer. 43 games played, 16 points (.37P/PG) and is a +15, he may take a few too many penalties at the moment but the kid has only played 53 games in the NHL. This is practically his rookie year, he has played well, primarily in a more shut down type roll (him and marincin staring against the oilers.. Kinda OOF) but he will only continue to develop in the NHL.

I agree with a bunch of the above posts, Marty is an 8th D man, ideally the only way he gets into the lineup is if we have 2 guys on D injured. He will make it through waivers, contract can be buried, cap hit will be less than league min next year, wheres the fire?

I understand the distaste for the guy because he may as well be using a shovel when he has the puck, but as a depth guy who may play 5- 10 games a year at most, dependent on the off-season defensive restructuring, isn't a bad of an extension. He is essentially a Marlies call up in a pinch.

Check your facts before posting, Dubas did not trade to get Marincin but Dubas was the intern GM in the summer of 2015 who resigned his extension and Dubas has kept resigning him to new contracts ever since.

Good top pairing defensemen for the Leafs next year after all their D walk.

With regular minutes, Marincin can be a serviceable Dman. He certainly has been OK as regular since Muzzin has been injured..
Even he he's a 7th or 8th Dman when everyone is healthy, he's certainly no worse than other teams 7th or 8th Dmen. Cap doesn't hurt at all even he's a Marlie.
Certainly a lot more cost efficient than and better value on the ice than some who are weighing down their teams with poor play and high caps.

I don't care if it's league minimum, he's not an NHL caliber player.

Marincin has played a role and done it without griping. Some perennial 8th D-Men will look elsewhere to ensure they stay in the NHL or get more mins/more games. Marincin has happily played in the AHL for much of the past 4 years, including playoff games (which are unpaid!), when his services have not been required by the Leafs. In the AHL he’s an effective shutdown D-Man who’s able to kill penalties and is good in the locker room at mentoring the numerous young Marlies D-Men.

As noted, while he will be earning a guaranteed $0.7M on a 1-way contract, none of that will count against the cap when he is not on the Leafs roster and, when he is on the Leafs roster you’re not going to find a cheaper contract to fill out your 5th, 6th or 7th D-Man slots. With where the Leafs are at, anything higher than league minimum or an ELC is just no longer tenable in the bottom pairing nor most of the bottom-6. There’s better D-Men but the Leafs can’t afford them.

I for one am happy MarMar is coming back. It’s good to have continuity and loyalty, an intangible quality that is so often lost these days. He’s another member of the Calder Cup championship team from 2018 that is now forming almost half the Leafs roster and he was a big part of that win (played top pair D with Hollsy for the Marlies back then). It’s great to see so many of these players progress to playing FT for the Leafs (with more to come)!

In sum, MarMar will never be a Top-4 defender in the NHL (edit: checks current Leafs depth chart on Cap Friendly....well sheeeeeeet, that’s why we’ve been allowing 6 goals per game) but anyways, *ordinarily* when he plays in an appropriate role, he does it well and without griping.

He's fine as a 7th defenseman, and this contract is appropriate for the role. Marincin is not that smart, but he actually is a decent possession guy.

6'5" #7 defender for league min with the added benefit being this guy can probably clear waivers and mentor the young players in the AHL if need be. Also if he's up being designated popcorn muncher that ain't bad either as he's done developing.
