Description
With Montreal on their 2nd 8 game losing streak, people need to realize is that we Canadiens are a terrible hockey team. MB needs to blow it up and get as much as possible for players that are getting older and are still playing well. Sorry folks but Price has told management already that if the Habs are missing the playoffs for a 3rd straight year "HE WANTS OUT TO WIN A CUP". Simple fact that RAY Ferraro spoke of the other night, Montreal are going in two different directions right now. Trying to win with Price and Weber and then injecting all kinds of youth with a rebuild that management is not calling a rebuild. Where in the hell do the Habs go from here. It will be costly but the fans need to bare some pain for now so that the Habs can sometime in the future may become a contender again !! If Montreal wants to rebuild, they have to start all over. look at the past cup winners, Pittsburgh, Chicago and even Boston. Built their teams through the draft and added pieces when they became cup contenders. I know people are going to rip these trades apart but when is enough enough. Stop dreaming about a playoff contender and come to reality and realize that when are heading in the opposite directions that we should be heading. PAIN FOR GAIN PEOPLE !!!

I don't think you're going to find any takers for Price or Weber, without taking significant salary back.

Most of those trades won't happen. Most teams weren't willing to trade a 1st for Hall because they want to keep their first because of the players available this year. Also I can't see any team trading for Price and Weber unless Habs retain 50% and send an interesting draft pick along with not that much going the other way

With their age and contracts your going to have to eat money on price and Weber probably and your not getting a 1st and byrum for him. Colorado is a possibility, they have cap space but they have cheaper younger goalies who are playing ok.

I love Shea, but he's got a high dollar contract until he's 40. There's a lot of risk involved with taking him on. I can't see him getting moved without some retention, or the team acquiring him sending a decent amount of salary back.

Montreal CANT trade Carey Price because of his 10.5 M. Carey Price doesn't want to be traded because of his NMC. The only way for this trade to work is if we're talking about 2013-2017 Carey Price. The Habs would have to give up assets or retain salary to get rid of Price.

one thing for sure is he has more value than Carey Price.

Weber is getting paid 1M for the last 3 years, if he retires before 40 yo ( most likely ) NSH will have problems, not the team Weber retires with

But how many non-rebuilding teams have the cap space to fit him in right now, without moving salary?

Trade a lesser RHD at 3-4M + picks or prospect for Weber

Yes, that's what I've been saying. MTL is going to have to take salary back (or retain), if they move Weber.

Probably someone will give a first for Petry, though it wouldn't be structured this way. Depending on the team, the Habs would either have to eat a chunk of salary (think cap teams like Toronto) or the deal would have a couple of sweeteners like a Habs 3rd in 2020 going out but the other team's 2nd in 2022 if Petry is re-signed or the team makes it deep into the playoffs. Something like that. As it is, yes, the Petry deal wouldn't get the Panthers all that excited.

Weber's contract was heavily front loaded, so he actually costs the Habs less than his cap hit suggests, and it moves to $3M next year. Since the Habs can't figure out how to spend $10M+ of cap space, Weber is a huge value -- a Norris candidate for $3M/year.

You're right that the Habs would need to retain some of Price's salary, which is not a problem for a team that cannot attract UFAs and is chronically $10M under the cap.

I think you might be wrong -- or at least soon might be -- that Price wouldn't welcome a trip out of Montreal. He's in the same hell that Patrick Roy was in in 1995, playing of a team that was coming off the surprise 1993 Cup but was actually pretty awful and heading into a rebuild (which seems to be ongoing). I was betting there was a deal already in the works for him to go to Seattle in the expansion draft, but these skids might expedite a move that might save both the Habs and Carey Price's career.

If the Habs go this route, the "lesser" Dman would be less interesting than the picks and, likely more importantly, the prospects.

I don't see the need for a "rebuild", which to me means that more than 50% of the players will need to be moved. Truth be told, when you add back Drouin, Armia, Byron and Gallagher, -- and keep Kovalchuk -- there's not much missing up front, assuming you believe the scouting hype about Suzuki, Kotkeniemi and Poehling. Out the back, I like Weber, Chiarot and Scandella. I'm tired of Petry's mistakes and too-frequent lackadaisical play (though when he's on his game, he's amazing!). Mete has taken a major step backwards in the last few weeks (Calling Dr. Bouchard ... Dr. Joel Bouchard), but Fleury just needs time to grow. Adding in Romanov (next year?), this D will be better.

The final piece of this is that it might just be time for the kindly old Claude to be moved upstairs to a pro scouting role (like Dudley used to do) and for Kirk to be let go. Whether Ducharme, Bouchard or someone like Benoit Groulx gets the job behind the bench, it's clear that the "veteran" coaches weren't able to help teach these kids how to not lose games.

So that's not a "rebuild", but it's not just cosmetic changes either.

DId the Bruins trade Chara and Bergeron to build their team through draft ? When was the last time the Caps held a rebuild process? How many times did the St. Louis Blues drafted in the top 10 over the last decade ?

My point here : You don't need to sell everything and to do a complete do-over. We sure need to get younger, and it is EXACTLY what we are doing (but we the fans are getting nut for this like always). I prefer to keep Price and Weber during this process, unless they decide to leave their own. We need patience, good drafting and good developing. We are on the good path, but it's a long process. Stop claiming a fu***ing do-over every year if you aren't patient enough to live with it!
