You can't retain more then 3 players salaries at a time.

I think Boston is content to either eat Backes' contract next season or buy him out. They're not going to give up a 1st to dump him.

I think the Kings could do a bit better on the Martinez trade, especially if they're retaining half his salary next season. Leafs could throw in Timashov or Engvall to even it out. Without retention, a 2nd would probably be ok.

Another 1st would be nice, but I think I'd rather just stay away from Jack Johnson.

Side note, you can only retain salary on up to three trades at a time.
