People seem to forget that Talbot went for a 2nd, 3rd, and 7th Round Pick. Doesn't matter if it was a "gift" from Slats to the Oilers, it set the market for starter-ready backups.

Coincidentally, that's about what this trade is in equivalence. Stotts is a 3rd Round Pick, Hutchinson isn't worth a damn.

Talbots situation is pretty different, it was done in the off season for 1 thing and he was only signed for 1 year and was a UFA at the end

Agreed, the value is there here. What i will say though, Elliot Friedman said they are looking to add a young forward that will be able to contribute and they said the price is high for Georgie. So as a NYR fan, I am hopeful we can get something more valuable than this return. What they actually get in return does not always align with what we hope for though smile

If Edmonton extended him - and they very much did - does his UFA status matter in the slightest?

The offseason part is somewhat relevant, but considering that the Rangers aren't exactly fighting for playoff contention, does it matter?

Yes the UFA part does matter, with an RFA you have full control with a UFA its never certain.

Would they rather acquire a young forward prospect like bracco? He won't get a chance in toronto, plus hes a local guy

That’s another possibility
