The only way Price leaves MTL

Description
As a habs fan, it breaks my heart to think about moving on from Price. I see one of two scenarios playing out:

1- Bergevin sells off some of the Future to put the habs in a window to win now with Price and Weber. This is the option I see as least likely to play out.

2- Bergevin entices Seattle to take on Price and his contract. This might require MTL trading him to seattle, eating some cap, and getting consideration for seattle to take a random player, but it's the only way I see this working out tbh. I also see this only working if Primeau is close to ready.

Carey Price at a $8M cap hit would be a decent trade piece for Seattle if they could retain I think.

Anyone think Seattle could flip Price? $8M a year isn't bad, and if Seattle eats some salary I could see it working somehow.

Price has a full NMC. He is automatically protected for the expansion draft.

Only if Price wants it. He can't be traded unless Price himself decides to waive his NTC.

So theoretically its possible. He could be traded to Seattle, MTL eats cap so his cap hit is only $8M, then Seattle could flip him and retain more. OF course it all depends on if he agrees to it.

I don’t think it’s an unrealistic situation if MTL asked price to waive his NMC to go to Seattle. They’d probably have to give something up for them to take him. I could see it being like Seattle picks random player from MTL, MTL trades price with 2.5m retained to Seattle with a B prospect. Then Seattle flips price with another 1m retained (he’s now at 7m x 7) to a team needing a goalie for like B prospect or whatever they get idk. I don’t think it’s an unreasonable situation. It’s all up to price though. If MTL is heading towards a quick 1-2 year retool (IMO they should) he might want to spend the last couple of his good years on a team competing.

Since MTL is getting out from 8m for the next 7 years, they’d have to give something up, not sure what.

Theoretically it is possible. The problem is: Price will only waive his NMC if he's traded to a contender since he wants to win the Cup. It's unlikely that Seattle will make a run like Vegas so he won't waive. And those contenders won't trade for Price because of his contract and his overall performance over the past couple of seasons

Personally think Price could be traded right now, not for the return fans would want but hockey is still an old boys club and Price is a proven name so a GM out there would trade for him if he was made available.

I think more importantly, why would the Habs bother letting Price be taken in the Seattle draft if we're stuck with a ton of empty cap or whatever?

Break down our GM's motives to the most basic reasons.

He costs 10.5M! - So what? Habs don't even use all of their cap space anyway so its not like because we have Price we can't get a a guy like Panarin etc instead.... We can add some more Alzners? You want 3 more Alzners?
He's no good anymore! - So what? Play Primeau instead then. Price can be the backup to Primeau once he's ready. Until then, it not like Price is stopping the Habs from being bad enough to draft good.. Habs even with Price are a lottery team soooo....
Its better to get something for him in trade! - Price is still a good player, not nearly as good as he once was but still capable of being a #1 but the contract stops any chance at a trade and if by all heavens you can make a trade, the value you are getting back isn't going to help you, now or in the medium short term anyway so why bother?. The only benefit the Habs will get by trading Price (In a realistic trade) will be in the last 2-3 years of his contract. Assuming, once again, we actually need cap space in those years to use it on someone that can help but once again see argument #1.
The Habs need to rebuild! - So rebuild! Keep Price as a mentor to Primeau and the veteran presence for the team just like Lundqvist has been in NYR rebuild. If price doesn't like it, tough. Waive your NMC then and we'll try to trade you if possible.
Habs need to go for it! - So get better defensemen and forwards then! Playoffs are all about getting hot at the right moment and Price still has the ability to get hot at any moment. The players in front of him need to be better and are as much to blame for this season as Price has been. Price can still be good with good players in front of him. He can't be good with bad players in front of him anymore like he used to be.

Every solution can still work with Price on this team. So if the any trade for Price involves us eating 50% and losing another asset, etc, why bother? Just keep and work around him.

I agree, there are still GM's who would trade for him but the value has to match the risk they're taking on and any trade like that has to come when Price is not at his worst and right now he's been struggling too much. If he has decent finish to the season, is willing to waive his NMC to any team that would take him, and Habs explore trading him, it could be done. I think the most important thing for that to happen will be the Habs and Price separating on good terms. The minute it turns into a gong show like Subban/Pacioretty, I think things become almost impossible to trade him without losing the trade completely i;e retaining 50% and taking back another bad contract like Lucic etc.

so the idea is to trade Price against his wishes to a team he doesnt wanna play for


IF we trade him it will be where he wants to play and we'll just retain cap to make it worth it for others.
I just dont see him going anywhere without his wife's Business being considered into the equation .
going from MTL Fashion to Seattle is a step down and in my opinion only a team in New York can offer her opportunity greater then MTL .

Price to NYR with Lundqvist coming back to MTL in the trade .

Price at 7,5m cap
for
Lundqvist
Lemieux
and a 3rd

MTL plays Lundqvist with Lindgren until Primeau is ready to come up .
if MTL's still not a contender by the time he's going UFA we'll ask him if he wants to be moved to a contender .

NYR gets a big name Starting Goalie at a reasonable Cap to help guide their young goalie prospects in a Tandem .
Price and his wife get a fresh start in the biggest market in north america in both fashion or hockey
