A question for Toronto fans

Description
I've seen about 5 or 6 AGMs today alone from Leafers wanting Georgiev. Fine, but here's a question: which goalie are you protecting in the expansion draft?

My understanding is that both Andersen and Georgiev can be taken in the expansion and that teams can only protect one goalie. So if that is indeed the case, who would you protect? Because it's a very real possibility that one or the other would be taken by Seattle.

If I'm wrong on any of that PLEASE correct me. But if I do understand the situation correctly, why would the Leafs give up assets for a goalie that they either couldn't retain, or risk losing their current starter who has been playing at an elite level?

The Rangers also don't want or need your scraps for him, because Shesterkin isn't eligible to be taken in the draft. So Georgiev can be protected.

But Lundqvist needs to be protected. Expansion Draft happens before July 1st so he is still under contract...

I think technically, Andersen will be a pending UFA so he won't be eligible for the draft. While its probably a tad underhanded, they could have a handshake deal of a contract that he could sign immediately after the expansion draft and then they can just not protect him.

Pending FA's are not eligible to be picked I think.

For Vegas they were. Seattle just needs to have a certain number of 2021-2022 contracts. Lundqvist also has an NMC...

Something tells me even if he was eligible, the Rangers would be more than happy for Seattle to take him and his 8.5 mil AAV off their hands

Hmm, good point. I could see that working out and that would be a very shrewd move

He'd have to waive his NMC so its up to Lundqvist, not the team...

I don't think they were for Vegas, RFA's were different but UFA's weren't mainly because what is the point, its super risky, pickup a UFA in the expansion draft and then have them immediately leave in FA. I would have to dig into the rules but picking guys who may immediately leave makes it really dumb. On top of that, how many other goalies are going to be available? Georgiev is just the current it girl on this site, there will certainly be several other good options to take, like one of Jarry or Murray in Pittsburgh? And there are others too, Washington? Boston, the list goes on.

Yeah I feel there are a lot of great goalies that can easily be a 1B next to Andersen down the stretch. Any goalie on a non-playoff team is up for grabs atm except franchise ones

Goalies are also hard to figure out, often the type of system a team plays will be the biggest reason why or why not a goalie is successful. Some guys are terrific at odd man rushes and others really great at just being square to shots from outside and play in a system where they can just be in position and be good. Its so hard to tell how good a guy is until he's in your system.

I still think the Islanders are not a team that will go deep into the playoffs. They just don't have the elite talent to go deep.

for vegas if they signed a pending ufa from that team, it counted as their selection. Lundqvist contract runs out after 2020-2021. Wouldnt make sense to require him to be protected if he doesnt have a contract for the following year even if he has a nmc, he has fullfilled his contract by the time the expansion draft is done.

I also think there will be a few goalies like Raatna or griese or Lenher that htey would rather take and there is probably other players off the leafs they would want more depending on who is not protected like kap, johnsson or hyman

His contract doesn't expire until July 1st so he does have to be protected.

"All players with no movement clauses at the time of the draft, and who decline to waive those clauses, must be protected and will be counted toward their team's applicable protection limits."

Goalies 1
under contract in 2017-18, OR
who’s contract is expiring & is an RFA in 2017-18.

Did you look at the expansion list for cap friendly? they have all NMC already locked to be picked. you know who isnt locked? lundqvist... because he isnt under contract for the following year. Seattle could choose to sign Lundqvist (dumb move but they could) and this would be their selection from NYR. It makes absolutely no sense if a player has a NMC and they have to protect the guy because they have the draft 15 days before he becomes a ufa, there is absolutely no move other than potentially trading his signing rights that would cause his nmc to need to be waived. Thats not how it works. they will protect georgiev and shesterkin will be exempt.

Note, this is the cba faq for when vegas had the expansion draft. draft date was june 2017.
