Description
I was reading something on twitter this morning and I thought it was an interesting proposal. Now, I'm not saying it could potentially happen. In fact I think it is a steal if the Rangers do this. But Toronto would most likely not do this.
Here are my thoughts:
Staal (@ 50% retained) is a pretty good piece to have on your defense when you have multiple injuries and want to win a playoff series. He is a decent defender. Yes he has an extra year on his contract but his salary isn't too bad. Especially if you want to win a cup. The only problem with Staal is, he has a no move clause so he most likely won't waive it. The other pieces are great for Toronto to have. Georgiev is going to be a great goalie. The Rangers have a log jam with that right now so he is the odd man out. Andersson requested a trade. He is a former 7th overall pick who needs a change. Has tremendous upside. Just get him tf out of NY. The 2nd is a great piece. As well as the 6th rounder.
Toronto gives up Kapanen. Rangers need Kapanen. Let's make this happen.
Didn't see the Buch trade on twitter but I thought it would be a good deal for Carolina. Thoughts?

This is only if the rangers are in a contending spot. Thx.

Georgiev to Toronto makes absolutely no sense, He's probably want to go somewhere where he can be a starter. And that's not in Toronto. Georgiev to Detroit for a deal based around AA makes far more sense.

alright! ill create something. It does make sense for Toronto. How doesn't it. You need good goaltending. Having Freddy be inconsistent a few times and having a back up goalie who is pretty god damn bad I think Toronto would do a deal for one.

I dont feel any need for the Rangers to move Staal with added assets. Just do Lias and Georgiev and maybe a slight add 3rd piece for KK. Staal can be bought out next year for a little bit higher of a cap hit than your proposed 50% dead money, and I think Smith becomes much more moveable after his July 1 2020 bonus is paid and he has a $4.35m cap hit but only $2.35m in salary owed. Less expensive ways to clear cap for the Rangers after this year for sure.

I mean it makes a ton of sense for Toronto.... who cares where Georgiev wants to go, he is an RFA. He can pick his team when he earns the right to a be a UFA.

I think Toronto would hate to have Staal in that deal, but would probably have to agree. I wonder if they would try to buy out Staal in the summer then. That should split the buyout hit evenly between the two teams, with each team taking on 1.8 this year and around 500k in 2021-22. He could even go back to the Rangers if that's where he wants to be. Lias Andersson doesn't do much for Toronto as they aren't really looking for prospects, but maybe hanging out with the Swedish mafia the Leafs have going right now would help him turn it around.

Not sure that's the deal that would happen, but I can see the upside from both groups. Gives the Rangers space to give DeAngelo the money he wants.

We need someone who can provide some additional scoring, but I think that's too much to give up for it. I can't see us trading the two pieces we got back for Faulk for Buchnevich.

Exactly. Unless you got trade protection, you have very little say.
