Small moves after watching last game

Created by: CHUG
Team: 2019-20 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 15, 2020
Published: Jan. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This team looks very dangerous already so I don't think a huge addition may be necessary at the deadline. A couple of small, cheaper moves like this may be all the Pens need to put the finishing touches on this team.

Coleman fits this teams mold (fast, tough to play against, no quit), can chip in offensively (18 goals), kills penalties, cheap contract and is good in his own zone (a +3 on a team with a -40 goal differential) and plays all three forward positions

The wild kind of threw their weight around last night and the pens battled, but a bruiser like Coleman could help the pens push back on teams that try to beat them up especially once the playoffs come around (Washington).

The other move is beneficial to both teams with the Oilers getting a scoring winger (big need of theirs) in need of a change of scenery, and their backup for the next couple of years on a reasonable contract (Smith has not been great this year), while dumping Gagner who the Pens can keep or buyout.

The Pens stock-up their prospect pool with pool party and get a third rounder (which they have had success with in the past) in a deep draft and avoid losing a goalie to waivers next year.

This team basically has two first lines and two good third lines that play the game the right way and would be a serious threat to win it all.
Plus these moves make our prospect pool deeper with the addition of Puljujarvi as opposed to having to move one or more of them to acquire a top six player.

With all those things you consider Coleman to be, don't you think they'd want more, if they decide to move him at all? It would be nice to see him on a good team but I think he holds more value than that especially mid-season.

Rather play Lafferty than Gagner, and Puljujarvi is not NHL caliber.

I'd say a second rounder is pretty fair for a player who has averaged 30 points a year over his first two years. His production is slightly up this year, but that has a lot to do with being moved up in the lineup on a fairly bad team.

Coleman already has 40 goals on his 3-year $1.8M cap hit with a year a half left. Devils don't have many untouchables but I assume Coleman would be at this point unless you drastically overpay.

That's why I bought Gagner out, the move is only to even out the salary cap exchange and increase the return value for the pens. As for Puljujarvi he has little trade value and a high ceiling so their is no risk in taking him on and he is currently playing quite well overseas. He is still only 21 and could develop into a good player in time and fill a cheap depth player role that the Pens are always looking for and maybe into the top line player he was drafted to be.

Maybe it's not that far off, but a 2nd round pick last deadline got a few months of Brian Boyle. This is a 2-yr rental of a better player. IMO he could pull a 2020 2nd + 2021 2nd, something like that.

Coleman is a 30 goal 50 point player this season. He could definitely fetch a 1st Round pick and good prospect. I think he’d be an excellent fit with Pittsburgh with his speed and aggressiveness but Devils may want a return similarly to what they got for Hall.

This is a much deeper draft than last years, but maybe the pens add a B level prospect, either way it is still a deal I would consider

Instead of buying Gagne out since they technically couldn’t, just trade Bjugstad for a pick and use Gagne as the healthy scratch depth forward.

Then I offer a 5th for Puljujarvi and move on. GMs learned from the Yakupov fiasco. Edmonton management (and fans) are loco if they think that they are going to get something of value for Puljujarvi.

DeSmith, Galchenyuk (50%), 6th for cap hurting buyout, 3rd, and and a (at best) question-mark that you can not sign until next year anyway just doesn't make any sense.

There is no chance that Coleman gets anywhere near the return that Hall got. That is not even close to a good comparable. He has never eclipsed 40 points in his career

Desmith and Galchenyuk don't carry a ton of value either, with one being in the minors all year and already passing through waivers and the other having the worst offensive season of his career. maybe the pick could be upgraded to a second, but not much more than that.

I'd say forget the trade with Edmonton unless you can ship off something small for Puljujarvi. I like Coleman he can obviously put the puck in the net and the penguins do well with players like that who don't try to do the playmaking and leave it to Crosby and Malkin. They should send out bjugstad or galchenyuk with a pick or desmith to get that done. The pens need to get healthy not make wholesale changes

If you are retaining 50% on Galchenyuk you should be able to get a 2nd for him from a near the cap contender. DeSmith could get a 3rd, as he has term he has value to any team.

I know he isn’t worth that much but that’s probably what NJD wants.

DeSmith should get at least a 2nd Round pick.

Why can't they buy him out?

Because it’s past the buyout window. Can only do it in the offseason. They could terminate his contract but he’d either have to break his contract or it be a mutual termination like the kings and Kovalchuk did. With the fact he will never get paid that again, I just don’t see him mutually terminating it. Especially with him only having the rest of the year to go
