Dubois Offered Marner Money Price to Colorado

Created by: HabsRafiki
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 6, 2020
Published: Jan. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This assumes the Habs are supremely confident in their prospect pool, which looks like it will include another top-10 pick this year, though I have included him in this model.

AT THE TRADE DEADLINE: It saddens me to say that the window for Carey Price in Montreal is closing fast and he won't be a meaningful part of Habs' long-term future. This deal assumes he would welcome the chance to move to a team that is further along the development curve. Colorado has a deep prospect pool and the cap space to make this work. They also have a great history with former Montreal goalies.

ON JULY 1: A hostile move by the Habs to sign away Dubois would force the Blue Jackets to blow up the nucleus of their team or take the four 1st-round picks. Columbus is 29th in the league in revenues, according to Forbes, and is already up near the cap when Atkinson, Nyqvist, Foligno, Wennberg, Seth Jones, Warenski, Dubinski and Ryan Murray are healthy.

If the Jackets match, Habs still add Jost and rotate Domi back to centre.

Even with retaining 3.5M, We don't get all 3 of those guys for Carey.

Terrible for Avs. Price isn't even that much better than Grubauer...

Originally, I just had Jost and Byram, but added Grubauer because I figured Sakic would want to move him out. I'm fine leaving him out.

considering you only offered aho 8.4 i doubt you'd be willing to go all in and burn 4 firsts on dubois. Plus colorado is not dealing byram or else he would have went for hall.

You know that's not true, both statistically and in terms of winning the big games. Price has carried a lot of lousy Montreal teams (just as Patrick Roy did). Just think what he could do one a team that can actually control the puck.

you're not getting byram, a young third liner, and a solid starting goalie for a 32 year old declining goalie well past his prime with a brutal contract, even if you retain and make it 7.5mil. term is awful

You didn't need a Taylor Hall. You do need a good goalie.

I chalk up Aho to a learning experience. It was the first offer sheet in ages. In the end, Aho ended up being the third-highest paid RFA signing anyway, behind only Marner and Rantanen. Dubois is a French Canadian kid who has shown he can play in the NHL. I bet Serge Savard could even be persuaded to unretire his #18 (though Dubois might prefer #81 instead).

So why do you think teams are calling the Habs? Price's numbers for the past two years aren't stellar until you look at the workload and the rotten Habs teams he has been playing behind.

byram will not be moved for price. it would just be stupid to move a future top pairing dman for price when the avs don't have an issue in net

Statistically, Grubauer has been better than Price this year.

In terms of contract, Grubauer is way above of Price.

In general level, Price might be better, but the value difference is not Byram and Jost. That's absolutely f*cking ridiculous idea to even consider.

It's either Habs that suck or Price suck. I think Price is not as good as you seem to think.

Except Colorado has a whole lot of top-pairing defencemen throughout the organization. Girard, Makar, Graves, Zadorov, Timmins, Meloche ... to name a few.

Obvisouly you haven't watched any colorado hockey over the past year. Grubes has been solid. He has the same numbers as price these past 2 years being 4 years younger and currently 7 mil cheaper. Theres no point to throw away byram for a slight upgrade in net and that's if price can get back to his elite form which he hasn't had since 16-17.

Contracts are largely meaningless to both teams as the cap is not and isn't likely to be a problem for either team in the next 4-5 years.

If you seriously believe you'd rather have Grubauer between the pipes for Game 1 of the playoffs, more power to you. See you on the golf course. (We'll already be there, of course. Heck, we're almost there now)

What? Cap hit is absolutely an issue in this deal. in fact thats the main reason nobody wants to touch price with a 10 foot pole (the other main reason being his term). Price's contract is longer than any other player's contract on the Avs, so they need to worry about re-signing literally every single player they have before Price's deal expires.

Graves, Zadorov wont be top pairing D men. Girard, and Timmins likely wont be but could be good 2nd pair D men. The only guys with legit top-pair upside is Byram and Makar. Meloche isnt even in the Avs organization anymore.

You obviously haven't taken to account that COL have to re-sign assets such as Landeskog, Makar and Kadri in a matter of 2-3 years. Acquiring Price makes that nigh impossible.

If money wasn't an issue, I'd take Price. But money is and always will be an issue.

even if they did find a way to keep those 3 with Price, his contract is so long it would also affect MacKinnon & Byram contracts, not to mention countless others
