Created by: Boomer125
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 16, 2020
Published: Jan. 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There is 12 weeks left in the season - Rielly is out at least 8 weeks even if they rush him back - There is no Salary cap for the playoffs - leave Rielly on LTIR untill game 1 of the playoffs at that time his cap hit means nothing and does not count.

Leafs can keep this roster and when playoffs start they can add Rielly and Mikheyev once playoffs start without going over the cap as there is no Salary cap during the playoffs.
No need to burn a year of Sandins ELC

I would much rather give Lilly at least a couple of games first, if he can be an improvement over Ceci, then we don't need to waste assets on getting a defenceman.

Gaining substantial defense and forward depth going into the playoffs is never a waste of assets. 3 out of the 5 assets will likely never see NHL ice time the 2 - 2nd rounders have a chance but it's like a 30% chance 3/4 years down the road

There are other options around the league with just as much experience and equal stats as Georgiev - he's ok , he's not great, he is very high risk , goalies are like that

I think with how TO scouts, drafts and develops, their chances are a lot higher. I think they are proving that if a player has high IQ and raw talent, they can be turned into good players. Look at all the depth TO has developed in the last number of years? Martinez is a marginal upgrade over Ceci, at the cost of whatever the 2nd could turn into or the 3rd or Bracco. Of Lilly can be that marginal upgrade or better and you keep those assets, that is the far smarter course of action.

I think the solution to Rielly's injury is actually Sandin and thus do not think the Leafs need to do the Martinez trade. Everything happens for a reason and its the Sandman's time and opportunity to walk in and play immediately like the top pairing defenceman he actually has shown he is with the Marlies and recent World Junior tournament. Keefe and Dubas know what the Sandman can do and also agree that they think that Lilly is also close for a promotion but do not want to leave the Marlies too short handed with defenceman.

Ok, not great - talking about a goalie with a .913 career save percentage at ages 21, 22, and 23 playing in front of a rebuilding team... People on this site severely undervalue Georgiev. Potential starting goalies don't grow on trees

that 2nd is way to much.

Potential.....theres the catch....just keep him.....not a coincindence NYR are trying with Shesterkin now.....

Ive seen 5000 "potential starting Goalies" thru my lifetime, 4998 ended washing dishes in some local Restaurant.

Would it not violate league rules if you purposely left someone on IR even after they were cleared to play? i dont know much about that but it feels like something that isnt allowed

Don't be so confident the Leafs make the playoffs without Rielly for a significant amount of time. That's a big hole on defense

Case in point, Hutchinson. Look at his season 2014/15. Makes what Georgiev has done look awfully boring.

You can not be serious. The odds of a 2nd round pick being a regular in the NHL is around 25%, and that's likely 3 or 4 years down the road. On any other team Georgiev is already solid backup and vying for the #1 spot, while also being under team control for the next 4 years...

Even if it is just potential, the value of that potential is worth way more than a 2nd round pick.

Which is why I made the trade for a defense man that plays an average of 20 mins a night

Only if he's cleared to play, which can be worked around, Hawks did it with Kane in 2015

For whatever reason non all star level starting goalies always seem to have lower value on the trade market than I'd think.

Guys like Jones and Lehner got late firsts, but otherwise they usually get seconds or less (Talbot, Scrivens, etc)

And playing him on his offside

Martinez is a LHD and only played on the right side in LA due to necessity.

Keep the draft pick. The Leafs aren't exactly flush with 1st and 2nd rounders over the next couple years. Those picks will be the guys filling holes when we need to clear cap space and can't afford to re-sign all of the guys like Kapanan, Mikheyev, Engvall, Sandin, Lilly, in a few years.

Also, if we trade for Georgiev, regardless of what we give up, there's a very good chance he only plays 5-10 games this year, 25-30 next year, and then we lose him in the expansion draft. He's not going to take over the starter role from Anderson. He's a good backup. NYR fans think they're going to get Kapanan or Johnsson for a backup goalie that will play 30-40 games, give me a break.

I agree that Martinez is not the answer. My unpopular opinion is after this week send Sandin back down to the Marlies for the rest of the year, unless other extreme circumstances require a recall. Don't burn a year of his ELC. He's good, I really like him, but with Muzzin coming back we don't have to use him. And there's another guy on the Leafs blueline that has stepped up, played substantial minutes and has been effective. I know Marincin is usually everyone's whipping boy, but he's actually played very well. Muzzin/Holl, Dermott/Ceci, Marinin/Barrie, Lilly as the 7th if they need him. He can spend most of his time still playing with the Marlies and the Leafs can take him on the road in case something happens.

And thats exactly what im trying to explain to all those wannabes trying to land Georgiev with even giving / asking Johnsson or Kapanen....
