Price and Seattle

Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Team Explanation
Price lives in the Tri-Cities in the offseason. His ties to Washington State and proximity to BC would make this an attractive destination to do a Fleury 2.0. I think if the Habs stick it out 1 more season they can explore the idea of matching Price with Seattle if Price is willing to go there.

Seattle would be able to market a future HoF goaltender as their franchise anchor as they enter the league.

To me, this would give the Habs time to develop Cayden Primeau and/or Price's successor in net.

I just can't see another team outside of Colorado where Price would fit and where MTL wouldn't have to eat a huge chunk of his salary to make it work.

Can they get through the next 18 months with Price and then explore the idea of waiving his NMC to be selected by Seattle? As for Price, would we welcome the idea of being the first goaltender in the history of the franchise in the state from which he played junior hockey and lives in the offseason?

Interesting thought. I bet somehow Habs would have to pick up some of that salary but not as much as other destinations would require.

Seatle will probably take Alzner ... like Vegas took Emelin (without any added incentive from Habs)

If Habs dont sign new too UFA next summer (they never do), the best players available at the draft will be Byron and Chariot. Nothing to get excited about.

This has Fleury writen all over it. Do you think Vegas would recommend trading for a No 1 veteran goalie to start a team? wink

At the Vegas expansion, Fleury was 33 y.o. with 5 years left.
At the Seattle expansion, Price will be 34 y.o. with 5 years left.

I think Price would agree to it for personnal reasons you reasumed well.

The only question is the return, who would be pretty small considering Seattle covers Price's whole salary (13M the first year, then 7.5)

On top of all the known connections of Price and Seattle his wife's from the region so it just add to the speculations. People thinking that Price is done are delusional, he still have good years in him and can be great mentor. It'd be a touchy trade and whatever Marc does in this situation half the fanbase is gonna want his head.
If the Seattle expansion draft is going along as the Vegas one and they stack picks, the trade talks has to start with one of their fetched 1st rounders (Vegas had 3 total) and then we'll talk. As you've described Bergevin could litteraly sell the Fleury story to Francis and saying how the change jumpstart his career for the best plus this time around you'd get a local guy with multiple strings attached to the region on top of it. He'd instanly become the face of the franchise and I'm pretty sure Seattle could get a share of the western Canada fanbase with him at the helm.

Well the Vegas/PIT deal was Fleury and a 2nd for the right to protect Murray. You are way off if you expect MTL to receive a first.

Also I just realised MTL can't retain salary because it isn't a trade but a draft. Vegas (and Price) would make a favor to Bergy to take that horrible contract (11 millions in bonus on July first 2021, ouch). Dont expect anything significative in return. Habs might even need to throw in a pick like Pittsburgh.

Beside, I'm not sure teams will send Seattle many futures to influence their selection after how we saw many teams (CLB, FLO, ANA, etc) getting robbed by Vegas.

No, bad comparison. Emelin was playing in the NHL and kept playing in the NHL after being picked. Alzner gets scratched in the AHL every now and then.
