Adding a RW

Created by: LetsTalkNHL
Team: 2019-20 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 16, 2020
Published: Jan. 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
When healthy, our lines will probably look something like this:
McCann-Crosby-X
Kahun-Malkin-Rust
Simon-Bjugstad-Hornqvist
ZAR-Blueger-Tanev

Although I want to see how Chucky progresses, I think the Pens will definitely move him out. It just seems inevitable.

Adding a RW makes sense since we have much more LW type players than RW. I do not see GMJR wanting to depart with his 1st nor any of his high-end prospects. I can see 2nds or lower being in play and some possible prospects, as well as Chucky (who would get flipped for another pick by the acquiring team).

Options:
Rakell (ANA)
Kase (ANA)
Toffoli (LAK)
Granlund (NSH)
Smith (NSH)
Palmieri (NJD)
Coleman (NJD)
Strome (NYR)
Fast (NYR)
Pageau (OTT)
Labanc (SJS)
Kapanen (TOR)

In all honesty, Rakell, Palmieri, Strome, Labanc and Kapanen would all cost quite a lot. These 5 seem like the really high end buys. A deal with Toronto would probably have to include a backup in DeSmith and a defenseman like Schultz with an extension attached to the deal.

Toffoli, Granlund, Smith, Fast and Pageau would all be considered "rentals", although resigning would remain a possibility. However, their respective teams will probably want to get higher picks for them.

Finally, Coleman and Kase's values are kind of in the air. Their teams can demand a lot, but they aren't guys you'd see a team giving up an arm and a leg for.

In my opinion, if we could get any of those rentals for a 2nd, Chucky and another "not too crazy" piece, I would do it. I do not think Fast would cost as much as the others. I also know that Pageau is a C, but I wonder if he could make it happen on the RW. I have always liked him and would love to see him on the Penguins.

I would also consider Kase if the price isn't too crazy. He has dealt with a few injuries, but a fresh start can be huge, especially playing alongside Sid.

I think Smith is the way to go considering we only have 3 right handed forwards and he would fit our team like a glove. He's definitely not the sexy addition but I think either him or Namestnikov would be the best options for us.

I feel like smith is the perfect move because his style of play is perfect when being one of Sid’s wingers. Plus giving Sullivan a reason to reunite Simon-Bjugstad-Hornqvist will be a huge plus.

Kovalchuk might be a cheaper option than Tatar
For Tatar MTL will ask 2020 1st + Hallander or Poulin + 2020 1st round pick but JR would never do that so maybe drop the 2020 1st for a 2020 mid pick and a 2021 2nd round pick

You know if we tried Galchenyuk on the right side it wouldn't cost anything

If he sucks in his natural position, what makes you think he'll play well in a secondary position?

Toffoli will most likely go to the flames they have more pieces that would benefit the kings. Kase is probably useless to us. Coleman would be great but the price will be high he's an up and comer. I still think zucker from Minnesota would be the best bet for what we want to part with

Kovalchuk has 0 ability to effect 5v5 play. Those days are long gone. 7 games in MTL and 1 goal. Not much different than his pace in LA. He's not a top line winger anymore. He's done in this league.

I think Toffoli and Smith make the most sense if Pittsburgh doesn’t want to unload their farm system that they worked so hard to build back up. I would move Joseph or Hallander in order to get Zucker but I’m concerned that having Zucker would cause cap issues beyond this year.

It's a pretty unimpressive list isn't it. I mean especially for what teams want to ask for.
The cap going forward is such a huge issue. Marino is probably going to get 6+ on a long term deal. If he plays this way next year it's an 8 year deal they are looking at.
Get him through his prime and at a cap hit that's managable. But the issue for that is they won't have the cap space if they blow it on a winger this year or next without moving someone out other than jugs and chucky, who I already assume is out the door.
1.5 million on the cap this year, maybe 2 next. If you got to pay him out 6+ going forward, you are looking at needing at a minimum 3 million in cap space to spare. They got no one coming off the books really because they probably need to move Jugs before next year,, blueger and ZAR probably get a raise.

There simply isn't cap. Why put the team in a huge bind for unimpressive.

They need to make a swindle trade like they did with FL last year. Get a good young fast player who will fit the system.
I just don't know who they could grab to do that. But I think if they are going to find a RW that's what really needs to happen, or possibly play the two rookies. They can play 9 games each.

I feel like this is what happens every year though...fans of rebuilding teams will always want the entire world and more for their guys and it’ll be like throwing a stone at a glass house if you disagree with their viewpoint.

If I’m Pittsburgh I’m using the Sam Girard contract as a comparable when Marino is ready to negotiate (7yrs/$35M).

The only way I’ve been successfully working Zucker into the cap is by giving MIN a mega package centered around Jugs and JJ to get Zucker and Brad Hunt but even then why waste the extra assets to make that happen?

yeah they are nuts. I think it was that way for a long time in the league where picks didn't mean as much mainly due to developmental reasons. But as the league gets younger and those players are hitting the ice sooner, the value has changed.

I think Marino gets 6-7 a year. It's the year before the TV contract. That is set to explode a bit. He'll be eyeing the 1RD role and Letangs contract ends the year after.
They will wrap him up on 8 years. Get most of his prime years.
It's because of signing these younger guys that the cap is a mess. It's a good problem to have but reality is. The cap isn't going up to cover the costs. So they either have to find space moving out other players or save space. A 2 year contract is probably perfect. But it's hard to find that guy. But it really limits what they can do bringing in guys with 3+ years term. Not unless they can move someone out.
