Adding a RW

Created by: LetsTalkNHL
Team: 2019-20 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 16, 2020
Published: Jan. 16, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
When healthy, our lines will probably look something like this:
McCann-Crosby-X
Kahun-Malkin-Rust
Simon-Bjugstad-Hornqvist
ZAR-Blueger-Tanev

Although I want to see how Chucky progresses, I think the Pens will definitely move him out. It just seems inevitable.

Adding a RW makes sense since we have much more LW type players than RW. I do not see GMJR wanting to depart with his 1st nor any of his high-end prospects. I can see 2nds or lower being in play and some possible prospects, as well as Chucky (who would get flipped for another pick by the acquiring team).

Options:
Rakell (ANA)
Kase (ANA)
Toffoli (LAK)
Granlund (NSH)
Smith (NSH)
Palmieri (NJD)
Coleman (NJD)
Strome (NYR)
Fast (NYR)
Pageau (OTT)
Labanc (SJS)
Kapanen (TOR)

In all honesty, Rakell, Palmieri, Strome, Labanc and Kapanen would all cost quite a lot. These 5 seem like the really high end buys. A deal with Toronto would probably have to include a backup in DeSmith and a defenseman like Schultz with an extension attached to the deal.

Toffoli, Granlund, Smith, Fast and Pageau would all be considered "rentals", although resigning would remain a possibility. However, their respective teams will probably want to get higher picks for them.

Finally, Coleman and Kase's values are kind of in the air. Their teams can demand a lot, but they aren't guys you'd see a team giving up an arm and a leg for.

In my opinion, if we could get any of those rentals for a 2nd, Chucky and another "not too crazy" piece, I would do it. I do not think Fast would cost as much as the others. I also know that Pageau is a C, but I wonder if he could make it happen on the RW. I have always liked him and would love to see him on the Penguins.

I would also consider Kase if the price isn't too crazy. He has dealt with a few injuries, but a fresh start can be huge, especially playing alongside Sid.

What about Tatar? 1st rounder and prospect and he’s signed past this season

Because the Habs fans on here think Tatar is worth 3 1st rounders and us taking Price and Weber's contract

GMJR and Mike Sullivan seem to have a weird hatred for him though

But then he wouldn't be able to play Kessel's very important spot at 3R.

Absolutely understandable. I just know Anaheim is near the bottom so I thought they'd keep their options open. However, a guy his age with that contract is hard to find so I get why they will hold on to him.

I do know that. I want Chucky to work here, but it doesn't seem feasible. When Guentzel went down, he didn't even play a full game with Malkin and Rust. Kahun replaced him and that line has stuck ever since. I know we could keep him, but a trade just seems so likely.

He will probably be the most expensive rental, and like I said, I dont envision the Pens moving their top tier picks/prospects. I also see Pens being outbid by teams like Boston/St. Louis.

I defo would love Tatar. He has been a beast. I dont know if the Pens wanna move that kind of stuff out though. He also plays on the left, and I feel like the Pens will favour a RW over a LW. I would take Tatar though; I think he is sick.

Or Kase

His name was mentioned earlier this year in a potential Justin Faulk trade. I can see them moving him for the right price. Injuries have taken a toll on his game and Anaheim might want to get what they can.

I still think that a viable deal would be Kase for Marino, but that would leave you with only one proven RhD next year (because I think Schultz is going elsewhere).

He would cost you a 1st and probably #3-5 prospect. Not Addison but basically anyone else.

Yeah, no way the Pens move out Marino. He has surpassed expectations and is an absolute beast. He is also exempt from the Seattle draft which is great. He will be in our top 4 next year for sure, since I do think Schultz is gone like you said.

Seems fair. I think MTL maybe asks for a bit more just because he has been so good and is signed past this season. However, I still dont think GMJR wants to move these type of pieces.

I think it's right on value, but you'd be stupid to trade Marino. That would be true even if Schultz was under contract for a couple more years; in that case, I'd rather trade him than Marino.

I shouldn't have used the word "viable." It's not at all viable from a rational Penguins viewpoint. I was trying to get across the concept of player-to-player value. I was trying to answer your question of whether Rakell or Kase was available and/or the likely price. Sorry about the very poor choice of word.

Here's the thing. Whenever he's in the offensive zone, he's generating chances. He played less than 8 minutes tonight and still got 2 shots on net and he got points in the 2 games before tonight despite only playing 10 minutes. It's just I don't think he's driving play in the neutral zone or winning puck battles the way that everyone else on the team does. He can't spend the entire game in the offensive zone, at some point he has to backcheck and step up in the neutral zone. I really don't think we should trade him or Bjugstad though. I mean is Tyler Toffoli really going to be that much better than Galchenyuk in the system that we play? Plus this team has so much chemistry I don't really want anyone getting moved off the NHL roster unless its absolutely necessary.

Thats fair. Like I said, I do like him. I just see GMJR moving on from him. No matter what he does, it feels like it will happen. If Guentzel was healthy and everyone came back, he would be the one out of the lineup for sure. I do think the Pens would prefer Toffoli over him.

I think Toffoli and Smith make the most sense if Pittsburgh doesn’t want to unload their farm system that they worked so hard to build back up. I would move Joseph or Hallander in order to get Zucker but I’m concerned that having Zucker would cause cap issues beyond this year.

I think Smith is the way to go considering we only have 3 right handed forwards and he would fit our team like a glove. He's definitely not the sexy addition but I think either him or Namestnikov would be the best options for us.

Toffoli has developed into the all-around player in all three zones that you yourself say Galchenyuk isn't. He's often used on the penalty kill, which I don't think that you can say about Galchenyuk. Frankly, I'd love to see TT finish his career in Pittsburgh.
